This resource contains an autism awareness activity pack. It is an ideal resource for Autism Awareness Day / Week. The pack contains six activities. Sensory Sensitivity / Overload This activity begins with watching a short clip about sensory overload. There are two tasks that follow designed for pupils to experience sensory overload when attempting to complete tasks; one is more challenging than the other. Autism Discussion Cards These contain 4 statements about autism designed to provoke discussion and to get the pupils to think about and develop their awareness of autism. They are not true or false statements and there are no right or wrong answers. Communication Difficulties Exercise This is a task designed to simulate the difficulties that many people with autism encounter when trying to communicate. Pupils take part in an activity in which they have to think very carefully about the words they use and what they are saying. What is autism? How Can I Help? Pupils watch a video about autism in which a young man explains 5 things he thinks people need to know about autism and 5 things people can do to help people with autism. Pupils are asked to discuss the five things that the person felt people needed to know about autism and five ways that people can help. Pupils then complete a worksheet. Autism Acrostic Pupils complete an acrostic piece of writing using the word autism as a stimulus. Two acrostic autism posters are included to give the pupils some ideas. An autism acrostic template is also included. The core contents of the pack can be tailored to different age groups or abilities by the practitioner. It has twenty-four different pages which contain a brief introduction and then explains each team member’s role and job description. It also has visual images to aid with colours,** shapes** and questions that could be asked to help the children engage and communicate with each other. There is also a tracker sheet which is great for following each child as they develop or it highlights if they need additional support. Lastly, the practitioner should have basic knowledge of play therapy and if not this pack could further develop their own personal skill set.** Please note 'This product has been written and produced by myself. Learning mat/visual timetable for SEMH/anxiety/PDA/ASD

This is, without a doubt, the most useful resource I have produced. I have used these personally for the last 5 or so years, and my colleagues have borrowed and adapted them across a range of children to meet a range of needs. They serve a number of purposes, but primarily they lay out exactly what is going to be happening across a day or work session which can reduce the anxiety which can lead to work refusal. They also provide an opportunity for a child to choose the order in which they do their work, which can be a huge thing, particularly when working with demand avoidant children. I have personally used this with children with diagnoses and needs related to ADHD, attachment issues, early life trauma, SEMH, ASC, Aspergers and PDA, and find it consistently useful. This resource is based around a whole day, but there are other versions available for individual sessions, as well as a fully editable version. My only request is that if you do use the editable version and someone asks where you got it, you direct them back to me.

Repeat story throughout the term to enable the child to develop anticipation, investigation, awareness, preference and much more. Could also be used in an EYFS KS1 class.
