White Rose Maths - Summer Assessments 2018

Thank you to everyone who are using our new schemes of learning. We are really pleased with the response and grateful for all the feedback. Over the last few months we have been working hard on producing new assessments to align with the new schemes. We have listened to feedback from teachers and schools and tried to respond to what they were telling us. The main change is that the assessments now cover related objectives from previous year groups material. So, for example our Y6 assessment does not just cover the Y6 objectives – which is what we had previously done. Instead it now covers content from other year groups too. We have done this after speaking to schools and leaders and we also recognise this reflects SATs assessments. We hope these assessments are useful for you and your students. Writing assessments is always a difficult task but we have tried to write questions that will help you identify strengths that students have and areas that need additional work. Please take a little time to read this document as it contains guidance on how to get the best out of the assessments. As always, we would be delighted to receive feedback from you. We always look to improve the work we are doing and we appreciate whatever comments you may have. The White Rose Maths Team

The importance of concrete - Professional development

Select ‘View more’ for an accompanying video. Fundamental to the powerful Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach, concrete manipulatives are a key resource in developing a deep understanding of maths for pupils of all ages and abilities. Continuing the story of the remarkable ‘Miss Rose’, this CPD package offers a variety of materials with which to inspire, guide and support your staff in using concrete resources in maths. The package comprises: • a video with a humorous and thought-provoking angle on the importance of the concrete stage • a PowerPoint presentation which forms the basis for a 1-hour CPD session for your staff team • a set of presenter’s notes offering prompts and suggestions for the CPD session. Together, these materials aim to enthuse your staff and demonstrate the power of concrete. The package gives a wide variety of development ideas and suggests further avenues and activities to explore. These CPD materials are available completely free of charge and, as always, we welcome all feedback on our work at The White Rose Maths Hub and the materials we produce. And be sure to keep an eye out for Miss Rose’s next video, in which she’ll be focusing on more ways of making sure that when it comes to mastering maths, Everyone Can! In March the White Rose Maths Hub want to provide primary teachers with a KS2 problem of the day. Division Investigation
WRMathsWRMaths

Division Investigation

(15)
A simple division investigation that asks pupils to show what happens when you divide. Pupils make whole squares to represent dividing by 4. You will need to make the link to the calculation explicit. Pupils will hopefully be able to see from the investigation what it means to make the whole and what the remain represents. Pupils can then start to reason why the remainder can never big bigger than what you are dividing by. They also look for a pattern in the remainder too.
Place Value - 4 digit numbers

Place Value - 4 digit numbers

(16)
This worksheet checks pupils understanding of 4 digit numbers. It is designed to be used more at the end of a sequence of work on place value (4 digit numbers). Pupils should be encouraged to use place value cards and counters to help them understand, reason and explain what they are doing. The questions start quite fluency based testing students understanding of place value in numbers. They then have to find 10, 100 and 1000 more than given numbers. They then have to order numbers and identify values on a number line.
