Counting back and counting up are mental strategies that are used to subtract numbers that are close together. These mental strategies help students find the difference between numbers by counting up (on their fingers) from the smaller number to the larger number to keep track of the numbers or counting back from the larger number to larger number. The answer is the number of counts.
