The lesson begins with a Do Now, before practicing skills for the springboard essay where students are given an extract and need to complete an essay using the whole text. This lesson guides students to find key quotes from other parts of the play as well as annotating the extract given. Students are then given a mock exam question to practice. All success criteria, learning objectives and resources needed are within the PowerPoint.

An A3 document that talks students through some key devices and technique to use throughout their written narrative to help them gain top marks. Students are given a list of useful devices, as well as a definition and an example. Students then can either pick out the devices used in any drafts or ideas, or come up with key examples that can be woven into any narrative they can write in their exam. Students are also given a useful 'Story Opener' guide, talking them through 7 popular ways to begin a short story, what benefits it has and an example. This sheet was useful for lower ability sets who struggle to embed creative writing devices within their work as it gave them some key sentences that they could use.

The lesson starts with a 'Christmas Carol Crossword' where they need to identify and recall the family members' names, before moving on to extract analysis. The first extract is modelled already on the powerpoint, but this can easily be removed and embedded timers are on the slides already. Think, Pair, Share opportunities are in the lesson too, with students needing to match up the quote to the description of how Bob Cratchit feels (slide 6 and 7-this will need printing). I have taught this lesson to three different classes and all classes have showed rapid progress and a real engagement in the lesson.

The first five slides are resources for the class. Slide 1 - a breakdown of each unseen poetry question - colour coded - to explain expectations from examiner, timings, what the question is asking you to do. Slide 2 - a reminder bookmark to give students to take home to practise with at home. It has 8 key questions students should ask themselves to ensure clear and detailed answers when responding. As part of the WJEC/EDUQAS poetry anthology, students are expected to learn and understand the context of each poem. To make this easier to retain, I have created a context homework sheet for each poem. The sheet is a simple and easy homework that can be tested as a Do Now at the beginning of a lesson. Each sheet has the title, date and name of poet, alongside a ‘Top Ten Facts’ for the poem’s context. This purchase will give you one sheet for each poem - something which I know at times can take hours of research. With these sheets it will save you and your students time, knowing ten top contextual facts that can help secure success for your students.
