A comprehensive covering letter and personal statement which I wrote during my recent job search.
Although it obviously needed to be adapted to suit the needs of each school that I was applying for, I found that having a ‘base’ letter was extremely useful. I was shortlisted for each job I sent this application to (and gained a headship)
There was nothing on line at the time that I could use to guide/scaffold me, so I hope that someone finds this useful!
This PDF includes 5 key questions asked on pastoral interview and their answers in detail.
These are intended to support existing or new heads of year as well as being potential questions you may get asked on interview.
In this set I answer:
how do you deal with angry parent?
how do you support a student struggling to fit in?
how do you lead a team?
how do you deal with poor student behaviour?
do you monitor student progress?
These answers are suggestions – they are not necessarily definitive.
If preparing for interview, I always recommend you tailor your questions to the school you’re applying to and ensure you are giving specific examples of what you’re able to offer.
If in post, always remember the policies of your school.

This fun and original assembly aids children in understanding the value of being creative in all of their endeavours, through:
Understanding what creativity is, and recognising why it is such an important skill;
Understanding that creativity is a trait within everyone (including themselves) that should be encouraged and harnessed;
Observing some amazing examples of what creativity can result in;
Learning strategies to demonstrate creativity in their own lives.
This assembly is tried and tested, and has always been really well received in the past. The slides are visually engaging and well-presented, and the subject matter is tailored to the interests and needs of young people.
The session also includes a fun role-play task to demonstrate how everyone can be creative and the internet link to a beautiful, thought-provoking video demonstrating the power of creativity. There are also various discussion prompts to enable children to understand how they can be creative in different areas of their own lives.
The slides are fairly self-explanatory, but I’ve included guidance notes to assist the speaker. Hope that you find this useful!
Looking for an in-tray task to support the recruitment process for an assistant or deputy headteacher? This task requires the candidate to order and prioritise a set of communication tasks and provide a suggested response with any further actions needed. They would need to demonstrate their ability to delegate, manage time, work under pressure and meet deadlines.
This fully editable resource is useful for those recruiting for an assistant headteacher or deputy headteacher position, as well as those applying as a candidate for the role to help prepare for the interview. Included are 6 different tasks, with template information including space for candidates to add their response to each piece of communication and their intended next steps. You may also find this task useful to support coaching and mentoring conversations with staff members who need support in prioritisation.
Looking for more interview tasks, take a look at our other options or interview task bundle.

This resource booklet contains a wide range of age-appropriate, engaging, and meaningful comprehension activities for use throughout the reading of Benjamin Zephaniah’s ‘Refugee Boy.’ Teachers have found them particularly useful in comprehension or guided reading sessions. They are perfect for aiding the progress of children towards meeting the KS3 expectations within the new National Curriculum framework. Children have found these resources extremely engaging, and for teachers there is explicit information within each task regarding which comprehension strands the task is designed to demonstrate. They also relate to key extracts, characters, and themes from the story, ensuring that children gain a deep understanding of the text.
Activities within the booklet include:
‘Context: Eritrean-Ethiopian War’ - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: ‘Know the purpose, audience and context of the writing and drawing on this knowledge to support comprehension.’
‘Zephaniah’s Description’ - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: ‘Know how language, including figurative language, vocabulary choice, grammar, text structure and organisational features, present meaning.’
‘Mr and Mrs Fitzgerald Character Profile’ - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: ‘Study setting, plot, and characterisation, and the effects of these.’
‘Vocabulary Inspector’ - to enable students to demonstrate that they can: ‘Learn new vocabulary, relating it explicitly to known vocabulary and understanding it with the help of context and dictionaries.’
Plus many, many more activities (the booklet is 23 pages in length!) I’ve also added it as a PDF in case the formatting differs on your computer.
All images are licensed for commercial use, and are cited on a separate document (included).

IMPROVED FOR 2024
This resource is an example application letter for the position of SENCo in a secondary school.
This letter should be developed by including your own examples of where you have completed the points referenced and the impact of that work as well as your learning from the work you have completed – using the spaces to help you do this. This letter is for guidance only and should not be used exclusively to apply for a SENCo role but instead used to support the writing of your own letter. Letters should always be tailored to the school you are applying to and your own experiences. This example includes more ideas than you may wish to include in your own letter and is intended to highlight a variety of content you could use.
This template is over 5 pages long and full of ideas which you could use or remove.
This resource is aimed a secondary school SENCo role, but could provide ideas for other stages of education also.
Please note: covering letters should not exceed 2 pages in length.
I never recommend sending blanket templates for prospective roles and always advise an application is tailored to you and the school.
