Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic, hardworking and highly motivated Head of Art & Design for September 2024.

A truly international school, the British School of Lisbon’s (BSL) mission is to be a world leading school. It is unashamedly ambitious with the education it provides, ensuring students thrive not just academically, but also personally and socially.

Every student who attends BSL is unique. BSL endeavours to instil not only a love of learning but the values and experiences that will remain with our students throughout their lives.

Our ethos is to be a contemporary and happy school built on a foundation of values and practices associated with a traditional British school. While remaining formal in style, BSL embraces the most up-to-date teaching methods and the use of technology in its classrooms.

The British School of Lisbon (BSL) is part of The Schools Trust (TST), the UK registered, non-profit organisation. Its principal function is the governance of member schools following the TST School Charter.

This is an exciting time for BSL as, while it currently serves up to Year 8, the trustees are now developing a stunning new second campus, BSL Restelo, with state of the art facilities. Initially accommodating middle school students (Years 6 to 9), as the school continues to grow, BSL Restelo will cater for students from Year 6 to Year 13.

This position is a great opportunity for ambitious teachers as there will be opportunities for progression as the school continues to grow.

Successful applicants will have/be:

  • UK trained with a certified teaching qualification, such as B.Ed, PGCE, PGDE or equivalent (PGCE/PGDE must be accompanied by a subject relevant Bachelor’s Degree).
  • Experience of teaching in the UK.
  • Exceptional subject knowledge.
  • A proven track record of providing outstanding teaching and learning.
  • Ability to teach Art in Key Stage 2.
  • Experience of teaching Art in Key Stage 3.
  • Experience of teaching Art in Key Stage 4 (I/GCSE).
  • Ability to teach Art in Key Stage 5 (AS/A Level).
  • A high level of written and spoken English.
  • Committed to ensuring high standards of teaching and learning.
  • Collaborative and able to work as part of a team.
  • Inter-culturally aware with well-developed interpersonal skills.
  • A willingness to contribute in a positive manner to all aspects of the school vision, including extra-curricular activities.

It is desirable that candidates have/are:

  • Experience of teaching Art in Key Stage 2.
  • Experience of teaching Art in Key Stage 5 (AS/A Level).
  • Experience of teaching Design & Technology in Key Stage 3, 4 & 5.
  • Experience of teaching in an international setting.
  • Child protection trained.

As a teacher at BSL you will:

  • have the ability to generate excitement about learning.
  • have a sense of humour.
  • be emotionally intelligent.
  • promote our mission and values.

In return we can offer you:

  • the opportunity to live and work in the vibrant and culturally rich city of Lisbon.
  • an excellent working environment, in which you will be encouraged to share your ideas and contribute to school developments.
  • the chance to be part of a supportive and cohesive team of highly motivated professionals.
  • the opportunity to teach bright, interesting and hard working students.
  • the opportunity to contribute to our extensive and exciting programme of after school activities.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and all staff must share this commitment. The post is subject to enhanced DBS checks.
