St Georgeʼs British International School wishes to appoint an Assistant Head Teacher (Head of Sixth Form) to lead and manage the Sixth Form team comprising the IB Coordinator, Heads of Year 12 and Year 13 and Sixth Form Tutors. In addition, the successful candidate will work closely with members of the Senior Leadership Team and other key members of staff, such as the Head of University Guidance and Careers. The role holder will also line manage a group of Academic Heads of Department.

Aims

  • To lead the Sixth Form by building and maintaining an ethos of high expectations, hard work and independence in learning, and to instil the values of the IB Learner Profile
  • To be responsible for the continued improvement in academic standards and outcomes
  • To assist the Senior School Leadership Team in the development and implementation of the Whole School Strategic Plan
  • To work closely with the Head of Senior School and Senior School Leadership Team to create a shared vision which inspires and motivates students, staff, governors and the wider school community
  • To ensure the Sixth Form adheres to the spirit and principles of the IB including the
  • embedding of the Approaches to Teaching and Learning within the IB programme
  • To oversee the general welfare and progress, both academic and pastoral, of Sixth Form students
  • To advise the Joint Leadership Team of appropriate curricular and co-curricular opportunities for the Sixth Form and to assist the Senior School Leadership Team in the planning and introduction of any agreed pastoral or curricular changes
  • To encourage St Georgeʼs to ensure appropriate progress for all students in applications to higher education or careers beyond Sixth Form
  • To keep up-to-date with the work of other Sixth Forms and external agencies such as the IB to ensure that best practice is maintained

Leading Teaching and Learning

  • To work with the SLT, Heads of Department and Subject Teachers to ensure that all Sixth Form students understand academic expectations
  • To model excellent practice in all aspects of personal classroom teaching. The successful applicant will teach a reduced timetable.
  • Too help every student make progress and maximise their potential
  • To work with the SLT to keep abreast of curriculum and academic developments and
  • continually review St Georgeʼs Sixth Form curriculum and co-curricular provision
  • To use all available data to monitor studentsʼ progress and, where necessary, work with Team Leaders and Tutors to manage appropriate and timely interventions
  • To manage all aspects of the exam results process, in liaison with colleagues (this includes necessary out-of-term working to cover Results Days and University Liaison during the summer months (July and August) both in school and remotely)
  • To attend Academic Committee or Pastoral Committee as appropriate to lead or address issues affecting the Sixth Form
  • To work with the IB Coordinator to manage all aspects of IBDP administration, including the options process, the IB Commission and tracking different national requirements to ensure the DP programmes facilitate university entrance
  • To model excellent practice in all aspects of personal classroom teaching
  • To support middle managers in achieving the highest standards through the Senior School

Working with Others

  • To work closely with the Director of University Guidance and Careers to ensure the smooth running of the Universities programme
  • To oversee the allocation and production of school references and reports, and delivering appropriate sessions to students
  • To liaise with the Deputy Head and Data & Communication Systems Manager to deliver high-quality student reports
  • To meet regularly with the Head of Year 12 and Year 13 /Pastoral Committee to review key pastoral issues
  • To be responsible for Sixth Form punctuality, appearance and disciplinary issues, promoting high expectations of dress, presentation, leadership and conduct of Sixth Form students
  • To manage pastoral issues in conjunction with the Head of Senior School, Heads of Year, Director of Student Services , and other colleagues
  • To plan, review and lead the Sixth Form CORE and PSHE programmes and to monitor the delivery and effectiveness of the programmes
  • To manage delivery of Sixth Form Assemblies, along with tutors, external speakers and other staff as invited
  • To integrate the Sixth Form into the daily life of St Georgeʼs as a whole and, particularly through the CAS programme, ensure our engagement with wider communities

Leading and Managing the Organisation

  • To lead communication with parents on all Sixth Form matters and to ensure that parents receive appropriate information
  • To lead with the Sixth Form Team on preparation of Sixth Form Prospectus, Sixth Form courses information booklet and any other relevant marketing literature
  • To be responsible for for leading on all Sixth Form events, such as Parent-Teacher Evenings, Sixth Form Induction Programme, Sixth Form Social Events, May Week Sixth Form events and others

Accountability

  • To be involved in individual, team and whole school accountability for student learning outcomes
  • To understand and use principles and practice of quality assurance systems, including school self-review, self-evaluation, use of data and appraisal
  • To assist the Senior School Leadership Team develop and communicate a coherent and accurate account of the school to a wide range of different stakeholders and different times during the year

Strengthening the Community

  • To involve parents and wider community in supporting studentsʼ learning and in defining and realising the school vision
  • To be accountable to governors for the specific areas of responsibility detailed in this job description and to advise and assist governorsʼ committees as required
  • To promote respectful behaviours which embody the schoolʼs values of Excellence, Internationalism and Inclusivity
  • To encourage stakeholder voice, in liaison with the Assistant Head, Staff and Student Development
  • To continuously improve the holistic education delivered at St Georgeʼs 

Specialised Responsibilities

  • All AHT roles hold a significant specialised brief. The revised leadership structure is: AHT Head of Sixth Form;
  • AHT Pastoral;
  • AHT Staff and Student Development.

These areas indicate the broad area of responsibility for the post-holder, whilst acknowledging there may be substantial overlaps with other SLT colleagues. The nature of the Specialised Responsibilities is subject to change, but is largely encapsulated in the ʻSLT Roles and Responsibilitiesʼ document in the Staff Handbook.

The role may be expanded to incorporate additional responsibilities related to the current IB Coordinator position.
