Job overview

As an outstanding academy for the third consecutive time (May 2012), we invite you to apply for the position of Assistant Head of Art in charge of Key Stage 4. Our aim is for all our students to achieve excellence in education, so we are all extremely proud of the recognition we have received from Ofsted in our latest inspection.

Wood Green Academy is a large 11-18 mixed comprehensive located just off junction 9 of the M6, with the centre of Birmingham being a 30 minutes drive. Our central location, so close to a major motorway junction means we currently have teachers who live in all parts of the West Midlands, Worcestershire and Derbyshire.

We are a “Converter Academy”, with a well-established teaching school. With a student population of approximately 1500 we have a large staff body ranging from teachers in the early stages of their career to those who have chosen to stay at Wood Green Academy for a number of years. Our teaching school status has enabled us to invest heavily in our staff. Our teaching staff have had access to NPQSL, NPQML, Aspiring Middle Leader training and Aspiring SENCo training, and we are proud that over the past year, over 20 teachers have moved onto promoted posts within the Academy. Every teacher also has dedicated CPD time – two hours every Wednesday afternoon. In 2014/15 we have run sessions on using IPads to enhance teaching and learning, differentiation, numeracy, curriculum change and behaviour management. Every teacher is equipped with a laptop and an IPad.

In January 2014 we were proven to be one of the top 100 schools in England showing the greatest sustained improvement in the percentage of pupils achieving five or more A* to C grades at GCSE, including English and Maths. We consistently remain one of the highest performing schools in the area and are always heavily over-subscribed.

As an enthusiastic, well qualified and dedicated teacher, you would join a very successful Art department.

Successful candidates will be:

  • Highly motivated and passionate about providing all students with the very best educational opportunities.
  • Fantastic teachers who believe in the importance of excellent teaching in Art, and can inspire students
  • Committed to further improving the quality of teaching and learning in the department and beyond

In return, successful candidates can expect to work with enthusiastic and well behaved students who have a genuine desire to learn, to work with colleagues who are friendly and supportive, and to be part of a school which values its staff and offers ample opportunities for professional development and advancement.

The Application Pack is available on the school’s website at: www.woodgreenacademy.co.uk/vacancies/

Please complete all sections of the application form, together with a supporting letter of no more than two sides of A4 stating your suitability for the post.

Wood Green Academy is a large 11-19 multicultural comprehensive school set in Wednesbury in the heart of the Black Country. The academy is located about 15km from the centre of Birmingham and has excellent national links by having the M5 and M6 nearby. It is an innovative, creative and forward-thinking school held in high regard locally and nationally. The Academy has a long-standing reputation for achieving some of the best GCSE and Post 16 results in the local area. In our most recent Ofsted of February 2020 the school was judged to be good with outstanding features. We are extremely proud of being one of a small number of secondary schools in the country to have been graded as outstanding for behaviour and attitudes under the new framework.

Proud of belonging to a large and diverse school, our staff are professional, highly dedicated, collaborative, supportive and friendly. We are fully staffed in all areas with subject specialists. Our staffing is extremely stable with a large proportion of our staff having worked at Wood Green Academy for many years. We continually invest in staff development through weekly dedicated Continuing Professional Development (CPD) time, and by offering professional development opportunities and career development. We are also a National Support School and a School Direct Lead School heavily involved with Initial Teacher Training working with local universities and Teach First through post graduate courses.

Our students are enthusiastic, well behaved and keen to learn. They are welcoming, positive and proud of their Academy. They have a good working relationship with staff, which is built on mutual trust, honesty and respect.

The Academy, although always striving to excel and attain the very best in terms of achievement, also strongly believes in the importance of developing the whole child. We seek to give students the very best of opportunities from which they can develop self-confidence, social skills and awareness of the world in which they are valuable citizens. We believe that ‘Success Breeds Success’. For our students, life outside of the classroom is very varied and Wood Green Academy provides the best opportunities as well as they best support.
