The Assistant Head of Upper Primary School position is an essential role within the Primary Leadership Team. Working alongside the Headteacher, Deputy Head and Assistant Head for Early Years and Lower Primary School, this postholder will support Year Leaders in Years 3-6 with the daily running of this area in the school. With a strong commitment to both student and staff wellbeing along with a drive for exceptional outcomes, this postholder will play a key role in helping the school achieve its strategic goals. This position has a 0.5 teaching commitment, amounting to approximately 15 periods per week.

About you

Able to create a classroom culture when there are no limits to what can be achieved, you will have a degree in your specialist subject, a teaching qualification plus considerable teaching experience and knowledge of the curriculum. Receptive to feed back and ready to embrace change, you will be keen to share best practice with colleagues and peers.

A strong ambassador for the school, you will be able to develop new ways to engage students and parents with the wider school and the Nord Anglia Education community. Your strong motivation and communication skills will also enable you to create a feeling of energy, excitement and personal investment within the classroom.

You must be able to meet visa-related restrictions for the Unites States of America (The Americas Region) including having British or American Citizenship or having authorization to work in the Unites States. If you are a British Citizen you must have a PGCE and/or QTS.

Roles and Responsibilities

In addition to the roles and responsibilities of a mainstream teacher, this leadership position includes the following:

Wellbeing

  • A commitment to student wellbeing;
  • Supporting Year Leaders, within their school phases to ensure that the school’s Behaviour for Learning principles are upheld;
  • Supporting the DSL in ensuring that student safety, child protection and student wellbeing are the number one priority;
  • Have a vigilance for, and commitment to the wellbeing of those that we lead;
  • Work with key school leaders and HR colleagues to ensure that HR policies and the NAE Code of Conduct are adhered to;
  • Ensure that the BIS Houston Primary School is an environment where all staff feel respected, included, valued and that they belong.

Strategic Development 

  • Developing, implementing and monitoring the Primary School Action Plans and Annual Improvement Plans; 
  • Ensuring that the Primary School continue to work towards the school’s long term strategic goals;
  • Support in driving the continued growth of our school, including the development of the environment, opportunities and systems in keeping with a premium international setting;

Leading Learning

  • Overseeing the year group leadership of Years 3-6;
  • Collaborate with others to ensure that standards are maintained at the highest possible standard through the use of monitoring, assessment, data analysis and consistency in day to day practices;
  • Monitoring the quality of learning through both the Nord Anglia Teacher Standards and the school’s own Quality Assurance Framework;
  • Participates in co-curricular activities, in line with school policy that assist in growing the school and are linked to the agreed learning programme. 
  • Contributes to the professionalism of instruction through engagement in PD, sharing of best practices and willingness to coach others. 
  • Reflects on their own practice, is open to feedback and dedicated to developing professionally.

Leading Others 

  • Line managing Year Leaders in Years 3-6;
  • Coaching and mentoring to provide the support necessary for others to perform at their best;
  • Providing support to ensure that colleagues continually strive towards the essential elements of High Quality Learning;
  • Lead with empathy, by developing professional relationships that are built on trust and mutual respect

Qualifications and Requirements

  • Bachelor's Degree 
  • Teaching Qualification (Certified Teacher/BEd/PGCE, Qualified Teacher Status)
  • Experience leading teams, ideally in a similar position;
  • An in-depth knowledge of the English National Curriculum (English, Maths and Science) for Key Stage Two;
  • An understanding of private international education, and Nord Anglia Education’s role as the world’s leading international schools group;
  • Data analysis experience with both teacher assessment and standardized data;
  • Good cross-cultural, interpersonal and communication skills to interact with diverse nationalities and cultures; 
  • Excellent analytical skills - with the passion and drive to demonstrate and quantify success 
  • Excellent time management skills and flexibility in dealing with multi-functional tasks.
