Job overview

Maple Ridge School continues to be a GOOD school. Parents describe the school as ‘amazing’ because they see their children make such strong progress. The talented staff team are proud to work at the school. (OFSTED October 2022)

We are a school for pupils aged 4-11years old. All of our children have learning difficulties, and most have autism, and we are currently developing our provision for children with more severe and complex learning difficulties in response to the level of need in our local area.

This role is the ideal first whole school leadership position for those with excellent classroom practice and a desire to broaden their impact beyond their own class, supporting class teams to ensure that the provision for children reflects best practice.

Assistant Headteacher Role Purpose

To work with the Headteacher and other school leaders in relation to all aspects of leadership and management, to take responsibility for the day to day running of one of the school phase teams, including but not restricted to staff development and deployment, teaching and learning, curriculum, assessment, behaviour, attendance and implementation of SEN provision in class and transition in/out/through the school. To lead at a whole school level on aspects as delegated by the headteacher through a distributed leadership model.

General Responsibilities

The Assistant Headteacher is to take a central role in assisting the Headteacher, other members of the Leadership Team and Governing Body to develop our school in accordance with its shared values and our school development plans.

The Assistant Headteacher is to be a teacher with experience across the primary age range; an experienced curriculum and team leader, a leader in assessment for learning and assessing pupils’ progress and a key person in the senior leadership team. The Assistant Headteacher will take a pastoral lead and manage teaching and learning in one of our three phase teams, providing day to day management of either the Team 1, Team 2 or Team 3 classrooms. We have the other two Assistant Headteachers already working within the school.

The functions and specific responsibilities below are to be undertaken in conjunction with the duties of an Assistant Headteacher as defined in the Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document.

Specific Responsibilities

The Assistant Headteacher will be class based for the equivalent of 2.5 days per week, although this may vary at times according to school needs. When required they will model good practice, develop relationships, support training and development and ensure ‘quality teaching first’ and secure the smooth running of the school. The Assistant Headteacher will take lead responsibility for ensuring the best possible curriculum on offer, provision, well-being, progress and achievement for all children in Team 1, Team 2 or Team 3. The Assistant Headteacher will be a model professional setting an excellent example to teaching and support staff. They will work in close partnership with the Headteacher and other members of the Leadership Team in actively and demonstrably promoting enrichment, entitlement and achievement through building and implementing agreed school policies. The Assistant Headteacher will lead by example of their practice, and by positively encouraging and supporting all members of staff. They will work with the Headteacher and other teachers to ensure that the school offers a high quality, exciting, engaging, well resourced, differentiated and well matched curriculum for all children.

We are a school for pupils aged 4-11years old. All of our children have learning difficulties, and most have autism, and we are currently developing our provision for children with more severe and complex learning difficulties in response to the level of need in our local area.

At Maple Ridge School, we aim to make a difference to all of our pupils and their families by ensuring that children are happy, feel safe and enjoy their school experience.

We provide an individually tailored education to prepare them for life ahead, by enabling children to have the confidence and self-esteem to be ready to learn. We focus on developing self-awareness, social interaction and communication skills.

Our vision is to provide all children with the opportunity to reach their potential and be as independent as possible, equipped with the necessary skills to be positively included in the local community and the wider society.

Maple Ridge has an extremely effective Home/School support provision. Maple Ridge provides outreach for mainstream provisions in the community and Thomas Outreach Project (TOP) support for pre-school children with ASD.

At Maple Ridge we aim to:

  • Provide opportunities for the staff to further develop their skills and expertise
  • Reward achievement, however small
  • Teach children to reflect on their own actions and successes
  • Be role models in the way in which we behave towards each other
  • Be approachable and accessible to children and their parents
  • Maintain regular contact with parents and keep them informed of their child’s progress
  • Ensure effective teamwork within school and effective partnerships within the community
  • Be a centre of expertise providing support to the wider community

We aim to provide a curriculum which will:

  • Enable pupils to interact and communicate with a wide range of people, teaching communication support systems where necessary
  • Encourage pupils to apply their learning into real life situations
  • Increase pupils' awareness and understanding of their environment and the world
  • Comprise suitably differentiated and achievable work activities
  • Enable pupils to express preferences, communicate needs appropriately, make choices and make decisions
