Job overview

PASSION – URGENCY- POSITIVITY- ASPIRATION - COMMITMENT

An exciting opportunity has arisen to join Applegarth Academy as an Assistant Headteacher, with responsibility for Inclusion across the school. The successful candidate will also be responsible for the management of our Enhanced Learning Provision, which provides specialist teaching for 18 children with severe and specific speech and language disorders. This is an exciting time in which to join our school as we continue on a journey to become a centre of excellence for inclusion and build on the strengths of our recent Ofsted inspection.

Applegarth Academy promotes a highly inclusive culture throughout the school, enabling all children to overcome barriers to learning and participation so that they can achieve their best. The Assistant Headteacher for Inclusion holds an important strategic role within the senior leadership team of the school. This entails co-ordinating appropriate provision for children with special needs and liaising with colleagues, parents/carers and outside agencies. The role also includes overseeing provision for ethnic minority pupils, looked after children, pupils with English as an additional language, and other identifiable groups who need support. We have a much higher than average number of children eligible for the pupil premium grant and a much higher percentage of children with statements/EHC Plans .

Applications are welcome from teachers who currently work in a specialist setting as well as from mainstream teachers.

Applegarth Academy is part of the STEP Academy Trust (Striving Together for Excellence in Partnership) and continues on an exciting, fast-paced journey of school improvement. We are a Rights Respecting School, follow the International Primary Curriculum and put the children at the heart of all decision making.

We actively encourage you to visit the school to discuss this leadership post and to see our values in action. To arrange a visit and request an application pack, please contact the Office Manager, Samantha Talbot on 01689841528, or email: officemanager@applegarth-academy.croydon.sch.uk.

Together we will achieve

Each of the schools within STEP Academy Trust has a unique character and Applegarth is no exception.

Applegarth Academy is a happy two-form entry primary school on the outskirts of Croydon. We have very high expectations and expect our children to make the best possible progress across the curriculum and beyond.

How we work

As a STEP Academy, our values – Passion, Urgency, Positivity, Aspiration and Commitment – are at the heart of everything we do. We have a collaborative approach to teaching and learning, and support each other to achieve our goals.

We share high expectations for our children and make learning fun and engaging through the International Primary Curriculum. Relationships throughout the school are good, and we are a UNICEF Rights Respecting School.

Nursery and Enhanced Learning Provision

We have a Nursery attached to our school which provides children from the age of three with a rich and creative learning environment. We are also fortunate to have one of Croydon’s Enhanced Learning Provisions on our school site, for children with speech and language difficulties.

Location and facilities

Set within extensive school grounds, we have a large playing field, pond area, peace garden and lots of different playground areas for our children to enjoy. We have excellent transport links, with the tram line into Croydon just a few minutes’ walk away. From Croydon, central London is a short train journey away and the town is on the outskirts of the M25.
