Job overview

Working in a STEM specialist school offers the post-holder for this role the exciting opportunity to shape and develop a new department within the context of a school where mathematics is central to the curriculum at every level. Applications are welcome from well-qualified and inspirational mathematics teachers who have an inclusive approach which inspires all learners to believe they can be successful at mathematics. You are likely to have experience as a subject lead in mathematics, or to be a leading practitioner in mathematics. Importantly, you’ll be excited by the prospect of building a mathematics team which is ambitious for all learners at the NSETC.

As a member of our senior leadership team there will be an opportunity for whole school responsibilities dependent on the skills and interests of the successful candidate, exact details to be negotiated on appointment. You’ll be joining a relatively small SLT and as a result, the post offers significant opportunities for professional development and growth: you’ll have a real impact on the direction the school takes as it expands!

The NSETC offers students a new style of learning and we are looking for a leader who will engage and enthuse young people. If mathematics excites you, then you’ll be passionate about sharing this with colleagues and you’ll be the kind of leader who seeks out links with industry and research institutions in order to make mathematics come to life in the classroom! With a growing key stage 4 and a large sixth form, almost all of our A level students take mathematics, and mathematics A level is also studied by some engineering and IT students. A small cohort of students study AS and A2 further mathematics.

We are currently based in fantastic interim facilities and in September 2016 we move to a brand new purpose-built school for 700 students at the Junction 21 Enterprise Zone in Weston-super-Mare. This is an exciting time in our development as we move into the second year since opening and begin work with our first small cohort of year 10 students. We hope that you will want to join us on our journey!

NSETC is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children, young people and vulnerable adults and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

About North Somerset Enterprise & Technology College (NSETC)

The North Somerset Enterprise and Technology College (NSETC) is a mixed, non-denominational, 14-19 academy with sixth form, situated in Weston-Super-Mare in Somerset. The free school, which specialises in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects, officially opened in 2014. NSETC is part of the Inspirational Futures Trust, and applications to join the school are made through North Somerset Council.

Across North Somerset and Bristol businesses have identified a shortage of people who are proficient in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths). NSETC is targeting a skills shortage across the South West to ensure employers can find the skilled staff they need.

The curriculum focuses on STEM, and students study within a business-like environment. The school day runs from 8.30-5pm, a structure which means students have flexibility to study for additional qualifications or take part in enrichment activities. NSETC has smaller class numbers to provide students with more support; each student is set up with personalised learning plans and has their own tutor.
