Job overview

Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry
Institute of Translational & Stratified Medicine
Ref: A4224

Plymouth University Peninsula Schools of Medicine and Dentistry (PUPSMD) is seeking to appoint an outstanding individual to lead our existing Biostatistics, Bioinformatics and Biomarkers group.

PU PSMD is committed to exceptional clinical learning, strong social engagement and world class research. Medical Statistics lie at the heart of our successful research agenda. We are looking for a talented individual to expand and enhance our current team whose roles could include own account research in statistical methods, research collaboration, contract work and consultancy, clinical trials and  support for research staff and students throughout the Faculty. Collaboration with colleagues in a renowned teaching hospital and a strong university make Plymouth a great place to work and live.

Sitting within the Institute of Translational and Stratified Medicine (ITSMed), our statistics group includes eight statisticians currently who work with researchers across PU PSMD and other Plymouth University faculties and has established networks with local collaborators, including the NHS, NIHR RDS and UKCRC-registered Peninsula Clinical Trials Unit (PenCTU), as well as with research groups nationally and internationally. Our research encompasses biomedical and clinical studies (e.g. screening and diagnostics), clinical trials and pragmatic health services research (e.g. RCTs of complex interventions) with strong links with the PU PSMD centres for biomedical research and clinical trials and population studies.
We are looking for an exceptional individual to lead the team and to make a significant contribution to the research outputs and income generation. The individual will be a key member of the NIHR Collaboration for Leadership in Applied Health Research and Care South West Peninsula (PenCLAHRC) and should have an important role in the continuing development of the highly successful PenCTU.

An opportunity for this appointment to include the role of Director of the PenCTU currently exists and applicants should tailor their submissions to either the Associate Professor (Reader) role description provided or Senior Manager role description provided dependant on their level of experience and profile.

You will have a relevant PhD, considerable knowledge of statistical theory, methodology and computing and of contemporary research in biostatistics. You will have extensive knowledge and experience of areas of health services research and of clinical trials methodology. You must have an internationally leading record of research, evidence of international impacts and an outstanding list of research publications in high impact scientific journals. You must be able to demonstrate a track record of successful income from funding bids, including independent grants.

The post will be supported by a start-up package, to be negotiated with the Dean.

This is a permanent, full-time position, working 37 hours per week, on a permanent basis.

For more information relating to the areas of health services research and clinical trials, please contact Professor Adrian Taylor (Lead, Centre for Clinical Trials and Population Studies): adrian.taylor@plymouth.ac.uk or 07952 400835 or the Associate Dean Research Prof C Oliver Hanemann oliver.hanemann@plymouth.ac.uk, 01752437419.
