Welcome to the Education Department section with essential details on the services and contacts within the Department.

The Local Education Authority (LEA), which is effectively the Council, has a duty under the School Standards and Framework Act (1998) to raise standards in schools. The Education Department helps the LEA to meet this and other statutory and regulatory responsibilities as well as providing services on a traded basis with schools.

The Education Department's priorities are firmly based on national and local needs. There are statutory requirements to provide a strategic lead as an LEA, ensure support for school improvement, meet special educational needs and promote access and social inclusion. These are delivered within the context of the local needs of Swansea which in particular focus on the strategic objectives which are summarised as:

improving learning opportunities for children and young people
improving schools
widening opportunities for learning in the community
ensuring effective forward planning, resource management and service improvement processes.
