Job overview

We are seeking a well-qualified and motivated Class Teacher to work with students with Sensory & Communication needs, including severe learning difficulties (SLD) and autism. You will require working knowledge and experience of students with SLD and additional needs such as communication difficulties and challenging behaviour.

Le Murier is an 11-19 Special School catering for students with a wide range of learning difficulties and is collocated with St Sampson’s High School. The School is organised into three departments: Middles (KS3), Seniors (KS4) and Sensory and Communication (catering for students with the most complex learning needs).

The Sensory and Communication department sits alongside the Middles and Seniors departments at Le Murier. It provides education that meets the needs of students with learning, sensory, communication and physical disabilities and difficulties.

The Sensory and Communication department offers a flexible approach to the curriculum focusing on skills that matter to this student group. Areas of focus include communication, choice making and social skills, personal development (looking at behaviour and coping skills, developing tolerance, confidence, self-help and independence), movement and body awareness (including therapeutic massage and hydrotherapy), as well as numeracy, literacy and information skills. The department is split into groups according to their needs.

Multidisciplinary input is sought for assessment, the setting of objectives and joint classroom working. Teaching and learning approaches used may include Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS), visual schedules and work systems, principles of TEACCH, objects of reference, sensory diet, Signalong and Intensive Interaction.

To be successful, you will need to demonstrate a commitment to high standards of teaching and learning and will be expected to make a full contribution to the life of the school.

This post carries a five year housing licence and you can expect to:

  • Work in a well resourced school that follows an innovative Bailiwick curriculum based on the English National Curriculum and which has favourable PTRs;
  • Be part of a leading development of ICT in education and be allocated a personal laptop;
  • Receive a generous relocation package to the island, including rent allowance;
  • Enjoy the benefits of more generous tax allowances on an island with no VAT.

Salary will be in accordance with the Guernsey Main Professional Scale £28,534 - £40,972 per annum, plus the Special Schools Allowance payment of £2,975 per annum. There is also an Upper Pay Scale (£43,271 - £46,024 per annum) for teachers who have successfully gone through the Threshold Assessment.

For further information about the post, please contact Jeremy Teehan, Headteacher, on 01481 246660 or email: headteacher@lemurier.sch.gg.

Applications can be made via www.gov.gg/educationjobs.

Closing date: 26th April 2015.
Interviews will take place in Guernsey on 15th May 2015.

About Le Murier Special Needs Secondary School

Le Murier Special Needs Secondary School is collocated with the mainstream school, sharing a central block of facilities including a sports hall, six-lane swimming pool, gym, climbing wall, changing rooms and covered atrium.

Outdoor grass and synthetic sports pitches are shared between the two schools and will be available for community use out of school hours.

Le Murier can accommodate up to 130 pupils with a range of learning difficulties between the ages of 11 and 16, although in some cases pupils may stay on until they are 19. Le Murier has its own entrance, headteacher, teaching and social facilities and identity but its collocation with St Sampson’s High School allows all pupils and staff from both schools to interact, share resources, expertise, teaching and learning strategies and best practice as well as helping to break down preconceived ideas about the different types of disability and difficulty. The collocation of the two schools on the same site will encourage pupils to live and work together in school and help prepare them to play a full part in society and Island life
