About Hugh Sexey Church of England Middle School

Hugh Sexey Church of England Middle School is a mixed, academy middle school for pupils aged 9-13. It is located in Wedmore, Somerset and has about 620 students.

After leaving at age 13, most pupils go on to study at The Kings of Wessex Academy in Cheddar. The school is named after Hugh Sexey, a royal auditor of the Exchequer to both Queen Elizabeth I and King James I.

It was formerly known as Sexey's School and Sexey's Grammar School, and converted to academy in 2016. It is part of the Wessex Learning Trust, a group of eight Academies in the Cheddar Valley.

Values and vision

The school’s ethos statement states that the school will work in partnership with the Church of England at both a parish and diocesan level, in order to develop the spiritual and religious dimension of its work.

Hugh Sexey Church of England Middle School encourages an understanding of the meaning of faith, and promotes Christian values. The school aims to support pupils to develop self-discipline, and supports them to feel valued, motivated, and confident.

It aspires to encourage pupils to develop a willingness to help others be co-operative, and to develop self-esteem. The school encourages a positive attitude, and instils in pupils a desire to give their best in all things.

It hopes to develop in pupils an independence of mind, and the skill to organise their own lives.
