Job overview

Swanshurst is an ‘Outstanding School’ for girls with over 1900 students on roll aged 11-19 years. We offer excellent support and CPD for staff at all stages of their career, including the full range of NPQs.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for us to appoint a new or experienced leader to grow and enhance our large and successful mathematics leadership team. The successful applicant will lead on a whole-school mathematics initiative focused on teacher development and student interventions to improve the provision and outcomes for HPA disadvantaged students at GCSE and their subsequent progression to mathematics and further mathematics post-16. This role has 1 day per week of dedicated leadership development time.

The mathematics department at Swanshurst is a highly successful one; students make above average rates of progress. We would expect the successful candidate to teach mathematics to the full ability range at key stage 3 and 4. We also offer further mathematics in year 11, level 3 mathematical studies, A-level mathematics and A-Level further mathematics.

The successful candidate will work closely with the head and deputy head of department to:

  • Identify target students for school-led interventions and monitor and report on their participation in activities, progress and outcomes.
  • Manage a programme of additional curriculum support and enrichment for target students.
  • Coordinate a tailored programme of professional development, drawing on programmes provided by external organisations.
  • Manage a programme for students studying A level Mathematics and Further Mathematics to ensure they have access to high-quality tuition support to develop the skills needed to access A/A* grades and perform well in university assessments.
  • Ensure that the mathematics curriculum addresses the needs of all potentially high-attaining students.

The successful candidate will be an inspirational professional with:

·        A track record of good to outstanding teaching.

·        A track record of good attainment and progress in KS3, KS4 and/ or KS5 students

·        An eagerness to learn and develop their leadership skills and behaviours

·        A vision and passion for growth and development of colleagues at all levels

·        The skills to effectively lead and manage a team

·        A relentless commitment to outstanding support for youngsters

·        A driving ambition to make a difference to every child at Swanshurst

‘Swanshurst School has been a great environment for my first term as an ECT. The support I have received from my department and the mentoring team has been amazing and is ongoing. I couldn’t wish for a better place to spend the first of hopefully many years of teaching.’ (ECT)

Ofsted (2017) found pupils at Swanshurst to be “happy, well cared for and that they secure excellent academic and personal outcomes” they described the girls as “polite, respectful and courteous”. Needless to say, we are incredibly proud of them and of all our staff who contribute to the “purposeful learning culture within the school that characterises the work of staff and pupils”

This post is covered by Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) and therefore the ability to speak fluent spoken English is an essential requirement for this role.
