Job overview

Stationers' Crown Woods Academy is looking to appoint an engaging, knowledgeable and dedicated classroom practitioner as Deputy Director of Learning - English, joining us for September 2024 (or potentially sooner depending on availability).

You would be joining one of the largest and most popular schools in Greenwich and we would welcome hearing from candidates with a strong track record of achieving results. You might be an experienced post-holder looking for a new and exciting opportunity or a successful and driven classroom practitioner who’s ready for promotion and has a strong desire to engage with the fantastic programme of tailored professional development we can offer you to be successful.

We are a values driven Academy with an unshakeable belief in human potential and are proud of our staff and students. We have the highest expectations of them in terms of academic achievement, personal development, attitude, behaviour, attendance and appearance.

Our pedagogical approach is based on the latest research and ensures that teaching is efficient and effective whilst prioritising staff wellbeing. We ask our teachers to plan for a rigorous learning experience in which knowledge is broken down into manageable chunks so as to prevent cognitive overload and allow our students to remain focused on what is important. We believe that knowledge should and needs to be taught explicitly from the front by the subject expert in the room. Working in this way allows our students to focus on the recall and activation of that knowledge and bring it to bear on conceptually focused questions. Through direct instruction, retrieval practice, low stakes testing and question level analysis in all year groups, we believe that subject gaps will be tackled as they occur and that proactively working in this manner will eliminate the need for reactive intervention in exam year groups.

English at Stationers' Crown Woods Academy: From Greek myths to Shakespearean tragedy, from Golden Age crime fiction to modern dystopian stories, from studying a diverse range of poetry to producing texts to promote change in society, our students are promised an enriching curriculum that will develop their confidence in reading, writing and speaking clearly, coherently and critically.

During KS3, pupils will follow a broad and balanced curriculum aligned to the International Baccalaureate (IB) Middle Years Programme (MYP). At KS4, pupils will study for GCSEs in English Language and English Literature (AQA). Our current set texts are: A Christmas Carol, An Inspector Calls, Macbeth and the Power & Conflict anthology of poetry. A-level English Literature (AQA Lit B) is also a popular subject choice at KS5. Join our highly regarded department and help to transform the lives and opportunities of our students.

Our ideal candidate will have:

  • Strong subject knowledge and enthusiasm for the subject
  • Experience of teaching GCSE English Language and GCSE English Literature
  • A comprehensive understanding of the research and cognitive science behind what makes effective teaching
  • The desire to forge strong relationships with colleagues and willingness to collaborate for the benefit of all students and staff
