Job overview

We are looking to appoint an inspirational Deputy Headteacher to join our extremely vibrant middle school (Years 5 - 8). This is an exciting opportunity to work with our recently appointed Headteacher, Mrs Caren Earp, in supporting our unrelenting focus on further improving standards of pupil engagement, learning and achievement. The Academy was rated "Good" in its March 2015 inspection but has the potential and the ambition to become "Outstanding".

Henlow is a highly popular and successful, purpose-built middle, deemed secondary, school located in an attractive rural setting in the middle of Bedfordshire. It is one of 134 church schools within the Diocese of St. Albans.

We are proud of Henlow Church of England Academy's ethos and of our values of Honesty, Enthusiasm, Nurture, Love, Originality and Wisdom, which underpin all activities and relationships within our school and our community.

We are a vibrant learning community with a committed and aspirational staff and we endeavour to bring out the very best in each one of our young people. Ofsted commented that, "Pupils quickly pick up and emulate the teacher's own enthusiasm for learning."

Our new Deputy will play a major role in the day-to-day running of the school and in strategic planning and leadership. You will be central to our energetic and determined approach to our development priorities and make decisions that will impact upon pupils' learning. Initially, the key area of responsibility will be to ensure that our systems effectively support our aims through securing high standards of pupil engagement. In the future, there may be opportunities for members of the senior team to rotate and experience all the different facets of leading a school.

We are therefore flexible and welcome applications from all candidates with a proven track record of success as a middle / senior leader.

If you are an outstanding teacher and leader who has aspirations for headship and if you would like to have a real voice in the future strategic direction of our unique school, then this is an excellent opportunity for you.

We can offer you:

  • the chance to play a significant role in shaping Henlow CE Academy's future.
  • a school with a growing reputation for success with supportive governors and parents.
  • a school that has high expectations and is totally committed to engaging our learners fully.
  • the full support of a talented and professional team of staff.

We require a professional who:

  • is an excellent leader and communicator.
  • has proven leadership skills.
  • is a strategic thinker, with the ability to motivate and inspire colleagues and pupils.
  • has the energy, commitment and enthusiasm to help us realise our vision to become outstanding.
  • aspires to headship.

Candidates are welcome to visit the school during the week from Tuesday 14th April. Please contact Mrs Kelly Jando via the school office to arrange a convenient time. Candidates are asked to e-mail their applications directly to kjando@henlowacademy.co.uk.

Completed applications should be received no later than 9am on Wednesday 22nd April.
Interviews will be held week commencing 27th April 2015.

Henlow Church of England Academy is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. Pre-employment checks will be undertaken before any appointment is confirmed. This post is subject to an enhanced disclosure from the disclosure and barring service.

"The academy's values permeate every aspect of its work." (OFSTED 2015)

About Henlow Church of England Academy

Henlow Academy is a unique school. A school set in stunning parkland, once part of Henlow Grange; a progressive school who chose to convert to an Academy in April 2012. A school that is brimming with a wonderful group of hardworking pupils, dedicated and inspirational staff and well informed, supportive Governors all aiming to provide and deliver outstanding learning outcomes. A school recognised as being “Good” in our Ofsted inspection of  March 2015 and SIAS inspection (May 2012).

Every effort is made to create a caring and stimulating learning environment, in which both children and staff feel valued and can develop to their potential.  The school also has a commitment to the continuing professional development of all its staff.  The school has achieved National Healthy School Status, Sports Mark, F.A. Charter Standard and Arts Mark (Gold).  Several building projects have recently been completed to extend and develop the facilities.

Pupils are offered an outstanding range of enrichment and extra-curricular activities, and every year they raise thousands of pounds to support many different charities by engaging in fun events such as our annual Fun Run.

Every pupil is provided with a wide range of experiences, and encouraged to develop interests and skills which will form the basis for future learning and social development. Our children continually perform well at upper school and reach high levels of GCSE and A level attainment.

Henlow Church of England Academy promotes an environment which is well-ordered and encourages self-discipline and respect for the views, opinions and property of others. Pupils take a great deal of pride in themselves, their school and their community.
Our children’s achievements, in all aspects of life, are celebrated and they are actively supported to reach their full potential as learners and members of society.
