About St Alban's R.C. High School

St Alban’s is a high quality Catholic, Voluntary Aided High School with a large thriving Sixth Form (743 students 11-16, plus 262 in the Sixth Form).  The school serves the Catholic parishes and the wider Christian community of North Gwent.  However, the school opens its doors in the Sixth Form to young people who share our ethos and values and who would prefer their post 16 education to be in a very caring, supportive and challenging environment.  We are very proud that St Alban’s has established a reputation for high standards and high achievement.  Our aim is not simply to provide an outstanding academic and vocational education, but we want our pupils to develop an understanding of, and respect for, spiritual and moral values within a caring Christian community.  In all that they do our young people are encouraged to 'be the best they can be'.  The school’s success is based on real Christian commitment and ethos, high ambition and high standards, good discipline and a very active involvement in charitable works.  We are very fortunate that our pupils are served by a highly qualified and dedicated staff.  Our teachers view teaching as a vocation, not simply a job.

The school motto is "Miles Christi Sum", “I am a soldier of Christ.”  The crest or badge combines this motto with the symbol of the religious order. The Daughters of the Holy Spirit, who ran a school on these premises from 1914 until the present school opened in 1963.  Park House, which was the home of the Hanbury family until 1914, was extended in 1954 with the addition of B Block and yet again in 1963 when C Block was added and finally in 1968 with the addition of D Block, giving a complete range of specialist science, craft and sports facilities.   The school has continued to develop.  It now offers courses leading to GCSE and A-Level, AS Level and BTEC.
