Director of Dance

Birmingham Ormiston Academy is a 14-19 academy specialising in Creative, Digital and Performing Arts.  The academy opened in September 2011 and has over 950 students (320 at KS4 and 720 at Post 16).

We are keen to appoint a well-qualified, confident and enthusiastic teacher as Director of Dance to lead, and manage the Dance courses within the Performing Arts pathway and to direct staff and students within the relevant curriculum area.

All BOA students are selected through aptitude in their chosen arts specialism and follow either a Creative, Digital or Performing Arts pathway.  The Dance Pathway at BOA is a centre of artistic excellence backed by some of the country’s leading creative enterprises including Motionhouse.

Dance is offered as part of the performance pathway with students studying BTEC Level 2 at Key Stage 4 and Post 16 students studying BTEC Level 3 Extended Diploma.  Dance is also an option offered at GCSE.

The person we seek to appoint will have a proven track record in the field of dance. They will be innovative, motivational, enthusiastic and passionate about dance, teaching and extra-curricular work.

Our overriding requirement is to appoint someone with the capacity to be an excellent leader. Strong leadership, management and interpersonal skills are paramount. Vision and the ability to build on our successes so far will be at the heart of this appointment. Dance is one of the most successful departments at BOA, this post offers excellent opportunities for an ambitious leader to develop this this flagship pathway to even greater success.

The academy is looking for someone who has:

• Qualified teacher status and a degree
• A strong track record as an outstanding teacher of Dance.
• Recent experience of teaching Dance at KS4 and KS5
• Experience of delivering GCSE, A-Level and BTEC qualifications
• A passion for Dance which is evident in your day to day classroom practice
• Proven leadership skills.
• The ability to work in collaboration with other members of staff to develop and manage artistic projects
• Exceptional personal organisation and time management skills
• The ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing
• The ability to guide students’ academic, personal and professional development, as a tutor, in accordance with the academy’s guidelines and procedures
• An understanding of the key national and educational policies and issues
• The ability to inspire high achievement in young people from all backgrounds
• Presence, dynamism, good sense of humour and approachability
• A commitment to extra-curricular activities
• An excellent record of attendance and punctuality
