Job overview

Based in Ely, Cambridgeshire

The Diocese of Ely has responsibility for the education of 14,000 pupils in 82 primary schools and one secondary school within Cambridgeshire, West Norfolk and part of Peterborough. It is an approved academy sponsor running 13 academies under the banner of the Diocese of Ely Multi-Academy Trust, with this number expected to grow. The Schools admit pupils of all faiths and none, pupils of all abilities and pupils from a wide range of backgrounds. The Diocese is committed firmly to providing a truly inclusive education within safe places where Christian values are inbuilt into the ethos and everyday life without any ideological pressure.

With the arrival of Rt Rev Stephen Conway as Bishop of Ely in 2011, the Diocese began work on a vision and strategy which places education at its heart. With a rapidly expanding and diversifying population in the region, and in the context of an increasingly secular society, the role of church schools in providing a high quality education enriched by a Christian spiritual dimension is as important as ever.

The Diocese of Ely is now seeking a Director of Education who will also fulfil the role of Chief Executive of the Diocese of Ely Multi-Academy Trust. The postholder will provide vision, leadership and direction to the education team and to Church schools and academies across the whole Diocese. He or she will play a critical role in maintaining and developing further the profile and reputation of the Diocese as a provider of high quality education to pupils regardless of ability, gender, religion, and background.

Candidates for the role should have a deep understanding of education and a clear vision for the role of Church schools in a fast moving educational environment. The role requires someone of significant educational experience and leadership flair. Outstanding influencing and communication skills will be required to build strong relationships with schools and other strategic partners within the Diocese and beyond.

The appointment is subject to references and an enhanced DBS check.
