Job overview

We are seeking to appoint a Director of Learning - English to lead our English department and to contribute to the wider curriculum network group as a key part of the extended leadership team. As an outstanding practitioner and subject expert, you will lead by example, taking responsibility for developing the curriculum and the delivery of English, ensuring pupils achieve their full potential. The successful candidate will lead and inspire the department to execute a well-considered curriculum through high quality and evidence-based teaching practices, within a climate that is underpinned by high expectations. The Director of Learning will play a key role in facilitating high standards of teaching and learning by guiding subject specific opportunities for professional development.

As a key part of the wider leadership group, it’s expected that the Director of Learning for English will form a key part of the curriculum network group, working closely with the Vice Principal responsible for Curriculum and Assessment and the Director of Teacher development to help shape the curriculum and pedagogical direction of the school. This is therefore an ideal opportunity for candidates looking to transition to a whole-school leadership role in the future.

Penketh High School is an oversubscribed community facing school that is determined to support the academic and holistic development of pupils in order that they leave the school with a strong skillset and positive life chances.  The culture of the school is underpinned by an academically rigorous curriculum, high expectations and standards, as well as a multitude of enrichment opportunities. All of these aspects of school life are aligned with the capabilities of our outstanding young people.

The school is focused on providing the very best provision for pupils by supporting the professional development of staff, offering a comprehensive and focused CPD programme and encouraging staff to engage with external, nationally recognised professional qualifications.

The successful candidate will bring with them their enthusiasm for English and the capacity to inspire and motivate both students and staff.

We are keen to hear from candidates who will:

  • Take the lead in inspiring and motivating the English team to deliver strong outcomes.
  • Be responsible for continuously improving the quality of teaching and learning across the department.
  • Be responsible for developing a well-considered curriculum that supports pupil understanding and success across both Key Stage 3 and 4.
  • Be responsible for monitoring pupil progress in English.
  • Make a significant contribution to all aspects of the wider English curriculum and enrichment provision provided by the department.
  • Make a positive contribution to the wider leadership team of the school, helping to shape key strategic decision making.

The successful candidate will be required to apply for an enhanced disclosure from the Disclosure & Barring Service. Details can be found on www.homeoffice.gov.uk/agencies.bodies/dbs

Penketh High School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.

Closing date: 15th April 2024 (12 noon)
