Have you got a proven track record of exceptional teaching in mathematics?

An exciting opportunity to lead a high performing department in an Outstanding school

We are seeking to appoint an exceptional colleague to the position of Director of Mathematics in our Outstanding academy following the promotion of the current post holder to the Senior Leadership Team.

This is an exciting opportunity for a well-qualified mathematics teacher to take responsibility for leading our high performing Mathematics Department. Over the past five years, the subject has been transformed by a dynamic and highly skilled team so that student performance is now amongst the very best in the country. In 2014, 85% of young people made or exceeded expected progress in mathematics with Pupil Premium students performing in line with those from non-disadvantaged backgrounds nationally. Lessons are characterised by personalised planning which ensures that all students are always engaged. Many are keen to pursue mathematics at A-level and beyond before moving into a range of rewarding careers.

We are looking for someone who sees the opportunity to lead such an accomplished and well respected department as the next step in their career. The successful candidate will have the pleasure of leading a team of highly motivated mathematics teachers to continue to build on the department’s many achievements and ensure that students from the most disadvantaged backgrounds have the best start in life.

Since 2009, The Farnley Academy has revolutionised all aspects of its work to become a beacon of outstanding practice. Outcomes at GCSE have increased from 32% 5+ A*-C including English and mathematics to 73% last year. In 2014, 84% made or exceeded expected progress in English and 85% in mathematics. Our mission is simple – to create an environment which is free from cynicism and unwilling to put limits on what young people can achieve.

In December 2013 the excellence of our work was recognised by Ofsted who judged the academy to be Outstanding in all areas. Inspectors noted that 'the quality of teaching is outstanding. Much is inspirational. As a result, students display a rare thirst for learning and an eagerness to succeed.' The academy hopes to become a Teaching School in September 2015.

If you already have what it takes to be our next Director of Mathematics, or have the potential to perform at this level with the support of senior colleagues, we would be delighted to hear from you.

In the first instance, an application pack is available to download directly from our website at www.farnley.leeds.sch.uk, by email to rachel.mcfarlane@farnley.leeds.sch.uk or by telephone to Rachel McFarlane, the Principal’s Personal Assistant, on 0113 2630741. The Farnley Academy, an Ofsted Outstanding (2023) secondary school, is part of The GORSE Academies Trust, a not-for-profit charity whose driving energy is centred on creating exceptional schools within the Leeds city region. The Trust has established a reputation for setting standards of excellence and achieving rates of improvements which have received national attention, not least of all those of The Farnley Academy! Chief Executive Officer, Sir John Townsley, is a National Leader of Education and gives considerable support to an increasing number of primary and secondary schools across the North.

Our mission is a simple yet powerful one; to create a school which is free from cynicism and unwilling to put limits on what young people can achieve. Indeed, we want to empower our young people with the means to bring about positive change in their own lives through the choices they make and to take responsibility for the future. It is to this end that teachers and other professionals work tirelessly for the benefit of our young people. This hard work has a profoundly positive effect not only on our students' motivation, enjoyment, and engagement in learning but on their social, moral, spiritual and cultural development.

The Farnley Academy serves the community of Farnley and surrounding areas and is located in the west of Leeds. In 2023, our students achieved a remarkable 77% grade 4+ and 56% grade 5+ in both English and Mathematics, firmly cementing our academy as the highest performing secondary school in the area by a significant margin. In addition to this this, the Progress 8 score achieved by the academy is consistently high, most recently achieving a score of +0.72, placing the academy in the ‘Well Above Average’ category and not only in the Top 5% of all schools in the UK, but most notably, the Top 1% of schools with a similar demographic to Farnley.

Teaching and learning are at the heart of our work. Lessons at The Farnley Academy are highly personalised. Teachers are very aware of what students of different abilities must do to achieve as well as they possibly can and use their assessment data with great precision to tailor tasks to different abilities. Students are very clear what they must do to be 'even better', because this is always stated to them by teachers.

Visitors to our academy always comment on how welcoming and friendly our school is. This comes from our pride in what we have achieved together and our eagerness to share this with others.
