Woking College

Woking College is a modern, friendly Sixth Form College which achieves outstanding results. We have 1050 full-time 16-18 year old students and 350 part-time adult learners. Most of our 16-18 year olds follow A-level programmes from a wide range of subjects, last year our pass rate was 98%. Value added performance is tremendous. In February 2015, the College was ranked 5th best Sixth Form College nationally for progress at A level. We also deliver very successful vocational courses in Sport, ICT, Health & Social Care and Business at Level 2 and Level 3, and Media and Art & Design at Level 3. For BTEC, we are also in the top 20% of Schools and Colleges for value added performance. Progression to Higher Education is excellent. Our Ofsted inspection in November 2010 graded all areas of provision good with performing arts and support for students being graded outstanding.

Approximately half of our students aged 16 to 18 come from three local 11 to 16 schools and we have strong links at department level in most areas. Over 25% of our students come from Black and Minority ethnic groups. Students receive excellent individual support and are set challenging targets to ensure the successful completion of their courses. Raising aspiration amongst our diverse student body is a key priority for the College.

There is a strong sense of community here in which all members are valued and we are especially proud of our achievements in supporting those students who have particular learning needs. We place great emphasis on our programme of enrichment courses which include an extensive range of music, performing arts, sport and language courses.

The Student Council is very active and involved in decision-making at all levels across the College (two students are elected governors). The College also has a thriving adult education programme for approximately 400 part-time learners who are speakers of languages other than English. We have an ESOL learning centre in the town and we deliver some of our Art & Design programme at our studio in the Lightbox Gallery.

Staff enjoy working at Woking College. It is a very friendly, dynamic environment in which to develop your career and we have good, modern facilities. Our professional development programme is tailored to the needs of individual staff and we work closely with the other sixth form colleges in Surrey to provide the best possible training opportunities. The College is growing and our finances are very sound. There is even plenty of free parking!

The College site is modern and well-maintained. Over the past three years the College has been successful in gaining funding which has enabled a new Sports Centre and an Art/Media building to be built, together with a new Science building which is currently under construction.

Woking is one of 6 sixth form colleges in Surrey who work closely together in the S7 Consortium of Sixth Form Colleges. Woking College, which is accredited as an Investor in People, is committed to equal opportunities and is a lively and supportive environment in which to work.

About Woking College

Woking College is an oversubscribed and highly successful college of over 1400 students drawing students from more than 60 different schools. Our very successful strategic focus has, for many years, been to create the very best environment for high quality of teaching and learning alongside the widest range of enrichment activities enhancing the cultural capital of our students. Alongside this we place a very strong emphasis on maintaining our wonderful community, we have a more diverse College population than might be thought of as typical for Surrey but we are determined to maintain our inclusive ethos. We are fully committed to innovation whilst maintaining a humane and caring approach for all members of the College community which has resulted in the doubling of the student population in recent years. These approaches have been key to securing Grade 1 ‘Outstanding’ in all seven categories in our October 2022 Ofsted inspection.

Woking College is enjoying record results, very positive value-added and an abundance of applications and quite rightly has a teaching and learning culture which is the envy of other institutions, indeed in recent staff surveys over 95% of College staff said they were proud to work at Woking College!

We have benefited hugely from an impressive transformation of the College’s estate over recent years, with the completion of a new Sports Centre in 2014, a new Arts Block in 2015 and a modern and larger Science Building in 2016. A full size 3G pitch was completed in 2020.  A £3m teaching block and another £3m project working collaboratively with an adjacent community centre will enhance our estate even further within this academic year.

We recognise the advantages of collaboration and have worked hard over the years to build and maintain close working relationships with other education providers and the Local Authority. The College has been a long-standing member of S7, the Surrey and Sussex group of Sixth Form Colleges, possibly the leading college consortium nationally, and we look forward to continued positive engagement with schools, colleges and the local community for the benefit of all.

With strong leadership from our passionate and committed senior leadership team, and with the support of excellent teaching and support staff across all areas, we look forward to the continued evolution of the College; we also look forward to meeting committed, engaging and passionate people who want to join us to further enhance the life-chances and choices of our students – which is of course our main mission as educators.
