About us
MYL believes the integration of play, confidence building and education within an informal and supportive environment provides a genuine opportunity for early intervention with children and young people who are at risk of falling outside mainstream services and becoming involved in anti-social behaviour and crime.

The development of youth work, crime reduction and complementary education provision from adventure playgrounds has succeeded in engaging and working with significant numbers of disaffected children and young people and producing positive results.

Manchester Young Lives (MYL) is a mixed, non-denominational school, situated in southern Manchester. It is an independent school and a registered charity that is dedicated to working with young people from some of the most disadvantaged areas of Manchester. Much smaller than the average school, the school will provide 125 places for secondary and sixth form students between the ages of 13-16, when fully subscribed.

MYL as an organisation has been going since 1969, when it set up its first adventure playground. It was originally known as Manchester Adventure Playground Association (MAPA), a charity aiming to support adventure play development across the city. As it grew the organisation was renamed Manchester Young Lives in 2003, and MYL was registered as an independent school in 2010.

Ofsted

“Consistently good, skilful teaching in all subjects ensures that students achieve well over their time in school, including by developing basic skills in reading, writing and mathematics. Strong, passionate leadership at all levels has ensured that all aspects of the school have improved since the previous inspection, most notably teaching, achievement, personal development, behaviour and safety. Behaviour is outstanding because staff take every opportunity to promote students’ spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.
