Academy mission and ethos

We are part of the Cabot Learning Federation however, as an Academy, we have independence about the direction we wish to take and the way we operate.  We are proud of our comprehensive intake and the rich cultural mix we all enjoy each day.  Cabot is a lively place to be as it is full of motivated students who play a significant part in their own learning.  Cabot is also full of dedicated members of staff who work tirelessly alongside the students to ensure that all students are safe, happy, fulfilled and challenged.

Deemed by OfSTED to be an ‘Outstanding’ school, the leadership and management of John Cabot Academy is structured around four main strategic areas:

• Outstanding Student Care
• Outstanding Teaching and Learning
• Outstanding Curriculum
• Outstanding Assessment

We are passionate about providing an outstanding experience for our students and believe wholeheartedly that students should not only learn new knowledge and skills but should also understand why they are learning them.  This is the reason why the Cabot strap line is Learners Inspiring Learning.

This is the fundamental ethos and culture of John Cabot Academy.  Students have many opportunities to influence not only which programmes of study they embark upon but also how the learning and teaching is designed.  We aspire towards the full realisation of students learning and being assessed at the time that is right for them.  The first stage of this process is the introduction of vertical tutoring.  With students being arranged into 4 tutoring communities we are discovering the benefits of grouping students with others outside of their age group.  The next stage in this process is to work towards students learning alongside others at their same stage rather than necessarily their same age.

In 3 Years Time Aims

A student who…
…is supported and guided towards selecting their personalised route of study based upon their ability, interest and motivation regardless of their age
…has a range of transferable skills which facilitate effective learning practices and which prepare them for life beyond the Academy
…is happy and who takes responsibility for their own behaviour, recognising and working towards their full potential in all areas

A learning environment where…
…staff lead, facilitate and support students in the learning of transferable skills for life and subject specific content
…space is used to support, challenge and stimulate learning in a broad range of environments
…relevant cutting-edge technology is used to facilitate effective learning

An Academy which…
…benefits from close working relationships with CLF Academies, Local Authority agencies, city-wide support as well as national and international partners
…is flexible and places current and future learners at the heart of every strategy
…prioritises staff well-being and recognizes the importance of each contributor to the student – staff – parent partnership
