Job overview

We are seeking applications from suitably qualified and experienced teachers who can bring a real enthusiasm to the school. Ideally, applicants will have experience of teaching Computing at examination level for A Level and/or in the IB Diploma and for (I)GCSE Computing. He/she will also be willing and able to teach classes in the 11-14 age range. Experience of international education at Secondary level would be welcomed. This position has become available following the promotion of the present post-holder to a leadership role in the UK.

The School

BSB is an independent, non-selective and inclusive fee-paying international school with more than 1,320 students from over 70 countries. Students follow a British-based curriculum up to the age of 16 leading to (I)GCSE and BTEC courses in Year 10 and 11. Post-16 they have a choice of three internationally-recognised pre-university examination courses: A and AS Levels; the International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma and BTEC.  There is an Early Learning & Development Centre (Kindercrib) for children aged 1-3. BSB has outstanding facilities and an excellent record of academic achievement.

The Computing Department

Computing at BSB is a flourishing subject.  All students in years 7 – 9 take Computing and about half of Year 9 choose it as an option for IGCSE.  There are also many students choosing the option for A level and IB Computer Science.

The Year 7 – 9 course of study is a true Computing curriculum, where students are exposed to programming paradigms from the very beginning of the course.  Many aspects of Computer Science theory are touched upon throughout the three years to give students a flavour of the IGCSE.  Programming environments such as KODU, Scratch and VB.net are used at this level.  Students also experience robotics and program instructions to robots.  All of the material for the course is produced in house and we are currently looking at how we can introduce HTML5.

Students going on to study Computer Science at IGCSE will study the CIE International course which concentrates on Computer Science theory, such as architecture, binary logic and pseudo code algorithms.  The practical element is based around programming in a high level environment, which introduces nested looping, nested selection and one dimensional arrays.

In our Senior Section courses, A Level Computer Science and IB Computer Science we work between Visual Basic .Net and Java, with the hope of introducing C++ to give our students a broad experience of different programming environments that replicate the real world.  We also regularly inject SQL from a VB.net front end into a SQL server, building dynamic front end, which can simulate a real world environment.

The department has been getting consistently good results for many years with a range of students and strives to help them achieve the highest grades they can. Large numbers of our senior students go on to study Computer Science at university and other computing-related courses.

The department has two bespoke classrooms that were rebuilt two years ago, which allow for excellent teaching and learning, with flexibility for the machines to be stowed away easily providing a more traditional classroom, as and when needed.  The rooms are also fitted with all modern audio visual requirements including Miracast, Apple TV, HD projector and HD television.

Beyond the classroom

The Computing Department avoids paper and uses electronic resources as its primary medium.  Our Virtual Learning space is extremely full and uses video and electronic assessment on a regular basis.

We run trips to engage the learners in the examination classes visiting large multinational ICT companies, discussing their technologies and their technological road map.  We also run extra coding clubs for students wanting to learn more about any of the languages that we support.

We are seeking a dynamic classroom teacher with the ability to inspire our students, embracing contemporary practice in teaching and learning.
