Job overview

We are looking for an enthusiastic and talented pianist and administrator to support the Director of Music with all areas of the day-to-day running of the Music department and take a full and active role in the delivery of the department's academic and co-curricular activities. The Graduate Assistant will contribute to the enhancement of the education, supervision and engagement of our pupils, encouraging the development of their passion and aptitude for music.

You will be educated to degree level in a music-related subject and will have achieved Grade 7 or above on your principal instrument. You will also have:

  • Excellent keyboard skills and demonstrable experience as an accompanist
  • Experience of leading vocal/instrumental ensembles
  • Excellent organisational and administrative skills
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to establish rapport with pupils, parents and colleagues
  • A flexible and enthusiastic approach to work
  • Experience of working with young people or being a leader in a team
  • Flexibility in terms of being able to work into the evenings and at weekends for rehearsals and concerts
  • A willingness to engage in the whole life of the school

Although we will consider part-time applicants, this position is, ideally, full-time, term time, Mondays to Fridays with daily working hours of 8.15am to 5.00pm. There will be occasions where the Graduate Assistant will be asked to work outside of normal timetabled hours, mainly for rehearsals and concerts.

This post is offered on a fixed-term contract for the 2024/25 academic year, is subject to annual review and may be renewed.

NB. There is unlikely to be any organ playing, with the possible exception of the Christmas Carol Concert, as we do not have an organ at school!

The Music Department is housed in purpose-built, well-equipped accommodation which comprises three classrooms, eight practice and teaching rooms, a 50-seat auditorium, a reception hall, an office, a kitchen and bathrooms. There are five full-time members of staff and 20+ visiting music teachers who work closely with the Director of Music.

Interview dates: TBC. As part of the interview process, candidates will be required to lead a Music department activity/session and/or accompany a pupil on the piano. Preparation work in advance of the session will be required and details will be provided prior to interview.

The Harrodian School was founded by Lady Eliana and Sir Alford Houston-Boswell and opened in 1993. The school’s original intake of 65 students has expanded to over 900 students from the ages of 4-18.
