Job overview

Set in the beautiful South Downs National Park and housed in an old country house, Littlegreen School is a West Sussex County Council Special School catering for boys aged 7 to 16 with challenging and complex social, emotional, behavioural and mental health needs. We provide a high quality educational and residential programme judged to be good by Ofsted in May 2014 (residential) and November 2012 (education). A new building with four classrooms should be completed by October 2015 which will allow pupil numbers to rise to 78.

On the resignation of the current head teacher who is moving to a larger school, the Governors are looking to appoint an inspirational leader who will build upon, and further develop, the school’s

  • strong focus on pupils’ levels of attainment
  • effective working with parents/carers and other agencies
  • emphasis on developing teachers and leaders
  • excellent provision for pupils with high functioning autism
  • record of all round support and nurturing of vulnerable boys helping to turn them into responsible young adults

Crucial to the success of this post is an ability to think creatively with flair and flexibility in a challenging learning environment and to engage and gain the respect of a highly committed staff.

The Governor’s plan to appoint a headteacher who has a proven record of raising standards for pupils with SEMH. Applications from staff with a mainstream or special school leadership background are welcomed. Effective experience of working with pupils with SEMH is essential.

The school’s current flexible boarding provision requires the post holder to carry out some residential duties. A headteacher’s flat is available to rent.

Littlegreen School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of young people and expects all stakeholders to share this commitment. All applicants must be willing to undergo screening including checks with past employers and the DBS.West Sussex is an equal opportunities employer and recruits from all sections of the community solely on the basis of ability to fulfil the job requirements.

We welcome visits and telephone calls from interested applicants: please contact Gay Grimwood, Clerk to the Governors, on 02392 631259 or bursar@littlegreen.w-sussex.sch.uk .
