Job overview

This is a fantastic opportunity to lead a large Art & Design Faculty in an ‘outstanding’ school

Burlington Danes Academy is a non-selective 11-18 comprehensive school. The academy opened in September 2006 and has made rapid progress to become a highly successful and over-subscribed local school. In its 2013 OFSTED inspection Burlington Danes was rated ‘Outstanding’ in every category.

We are looking for an outstanding Head of Art and Design to lead a large, well-resourced and successful faculty. With responsibility for developing the curriculum, the teaching and learning and the extra-curricular provision of a broad range of subjects, this is an excellent opportunity to implement a holistic vision of how art and design subjects can contribute to every child’s education.

Over the last six years the Art provision at Burlington Danes Academy has grown to include Graphics, Textiles and an innovative 3D Design course alongside Fine Art, whilst a successful catering course sits within the faculty umbrella. In the Sixth Form students take a Fine Art in A-Level and the ambitious nature of the course as taught has enabled students to apply successfully to foundation courses at prestigious London art schools and architecture at Cambridge University. Last year individual students scored 100% at both GCSE and A-Level whilst a dedicated Sixth Form Studio and exhibition space allow students to work and present outcomes at a scale beyond most schools. The Faculty comprises 8 subject-specific studios including a Mac computer suite and a small subject library.

The Head of the Art and Design Faculty will lead our successful and committed team to even greater heights than those attained already.?? You will need experience of successful teaching to A level as well as the drive and commitment to move teaching, learning and progress forward and respond to academy targets. Strong leadership and team-building skills are essential.

Our ideal candidate will:

  • have experience of teaching outstanding lessons
  • have a clear vision for the role and value of art and design subjects in a modern curriculum
  • be eager to develop their knowledge and practice of contemporary subject-specific pedagogy
  • have demonstrable evidence of raising attainment in an urban, multicultural setting
  • be committed to Ark and Burlington Danes Academy’s ethos of high expectations and no excuses
  • have the resolve to make a real difference to the lives of pupils
  • possess a strong desire to develop an outstanding department by creating a culture where learning is greatly valued by all
  • have experience of working in a challenging classroom environment, implementing strategies to improve behaviour

The successful candidate will have the opportunity to:

  • teach in the academy’s well resourced studios, working alongside a committed and skilled team of teachers and technicians
  • benefit from the academy’s regular and progressive internal staff development programme
  • build a team in their own vision through both recruitment and leading internal INSET
  • join a network of Ark academies and gain access to an exclusive range of benefits including reduced gym membership and a comprehensive CPD provision

Curriculum

We believe that everyone deserves to be accepted, included and empowered to live a life that is purposeful and fulfilling. Our curriculum is a key driver of this vision and our Christian ethos. We place the curriculum at the heart of school life. It drives all other decisions that we make and is the best means we have of demonstrating as a school what we believe in and what we stand for. Our curriculum is a broad, balanced and equitable offer; built around the core disciplines of English, mathematics, science, humanities, languages and religious education. All subject areas prepare pupils for future study within their discipline, with mastery of core and foundation subjects ensuring pupils have choice later on in their education; as they specialise in key areas of study.  The curriculum in each subject area has been designed backwards from university study, through A-Level, GCSE, and into the Primary and Early Years phase to ensure students can reach their fullest potential.
