Job overview

We are looking to appoint an enthusiastic, inspirational and well qualified specialist to lead our successful and experienced Biology Department.

Early applications welcome. For an informal discussion on the post, please contact Mrs Clark (Principal) at the school.

The School

King Edward VI High School for Girls (KEHS) is one of the most successful girls’ schools in this country with outstanding academic results and a large programme of extra-curricular activity. The school is an independent day school with 560 girls aged 11-18 and is part of the King Edward VI Foundation, which has eight schools in Birmingham. It is situated on a beautiful 50 acre campus in Edgbaston, which it shares with King Edward’s School. It is only three miles from Birmingham city centre and has excellent transport access by road and rail (the University train station is only a 10 minute walk).

The Department

Biology is taught as a separate science throughout the school. The purpose of the Biology lessons in the Thirds (Year 7) and the Lower Fourth (Year 8) is to provide an insight into what Biology involves, to develop practical skills and to facilitate an enjoyable and positive experience.

`Biology is part of the core curriculum to GCSE and girls embark on the GCSE course in the Upper Fourth (Year 9), taking the examination at the end of the Upper Fifth (Year 11). Results are excellent; 77% of girls achieved a grade A*/A in 2014. The department has recently chosen to follow the International GCSE Biology.

Biology is a very popular choice at A’ level; the department currently has four groups at AS level and another four at A2 level. Girls follow the AQA course and results are once again excellent with 84% of girls achieving grade A*/A at A’ level in 2014. A large number of girls go on to study science-based courses at university, with a considerable number of them taking medicine and dentistry each year.

Girls have the opportunity of participating in a wide range of extra-curricular activities; including residential and day field trips, museum visits, bird watching and, more recently, visiting the GCSE Live lecture at Birmingham Symphony Hall.

The department has six experienced members of teaching staff, four of whom are full time. The department has four well-equipped laboratories and benefits from excellent laboratory technician support.

Application Procedure

If you wish to be considered for this post, please complete an application form giving full details of your qualifications and experience and the names, addresses and telephone numbers of two referees and send it, together with a letter to the Principal outlining the reasons for your application by: Noon on Tuesday 21st April 2015. Interviews will take place provisionally on Wednesday 29th April.
