Job overview

Post title: Head of English for ages 11-16 years

School: The New School, 149 Central Hill, Norwood, SE19 1RT

Salary: Competitive

Responsible to: The Co-Headteachers

We are hiring a Head of English for ages 11-16 to join our growing team in August 2024. If you are passionate about teaching English, have a clear idea of how to construct and shape an ambitious, challenging curriculum and schemes of work, whilst also believing in young people’s agency then this is the role for you.

We are looking for someone who believes that learning should be engaging, critically reflective, and culturally responsive. That learning should be connected to the real world, the lives and interests of young people.

We have a fantastic opportunity for you to join our innovative, research school. We believe in shaping education in a way that is meaningful for young people, that engages their voice in learning, and that supports their social, emotional and academic learning; teaching them responsible freedom. We are a small but creative team who work collaboratively within our democratic decision-making structure to evolve the educational narrative and understand the impact on young people when we take a different lens on young people’s agency and learning.

This is a full-time position; and as we always aim to expand the diversity within our team, we welcome applications from those who wish to work more flexibly. If that sounds interesting, we want to hear from you!

What you can expect during our recruitment process:

It's also your chance to ask questions about our unique school’s model. This will be one of our Co-Headteachers and another member of our team.

Trial day: Successful candidates will get the opportunity to be part of our team for a paid trial day, followed by a reflection on our practices.

Don't hesitate to ask for additional information or feedback at any point in the process.
