Job overview

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, dynamic and dedicated leader of English, who has the ability to inspire students with their teaching and who will lead the department on an unobstructed mission to further advance the improving achievement of pupils. This post has become available from September 2015.

Smith’s Wood is a very popular 11-18 sports college, in challenging circumstances; we are an incredibly popular choice for students and their parents. Having moved into our new, £26 million, building in September 2009, we also welcomed our first cohort of post-16 students of which there are now 140 students in Key Stage 5. In October 2012 we were judged as a GOOD school by Ofsted. We are highly ambitious for our students; we continually strive to improve and want someone who can help us achieve that ambition. This is a pivotal time for the future development of the College; if you feel you are able to meet the challenges we face then please read on!

English is part of the Languages Faculty (along with Modern Foreign Languages) and you will be working closely with 13 other teachers, leading 7 in English. At Key Stage 5, students study English Literature and Media Studies. The English Department has made a significant contribution to raising standards at Smith’s Wood and is one of the leading departments in the College, working relentlessly for every pupil to achieve their true potential. The Department is justly proud of its achievements over the past few years; a reflective and dynamic approach is key to the department's ethos.

The College is divided into Upper & Lower School, each occupying a separate wing of the building. The Faculty has 8 dedicated rooms in lower school and 5 rooms in upper school. The department is supported by 3 dedicated subject specific teaching assistants and an administrator. The new College is ‘IT rich’ and there are several ‘open access’ areas across the schools.

Smith’s Wood is justly proud of the professional support it gives all staff and the future opportunities it offers them.
This is a great opportunity to be involved in a pivotal phase in our drive towards excellence. If you are person with resilience, ambition, commitment and dedication, we would like to hear from you.

A completed application form and a 2-sided letter of application, must be received by 12pm Monday 20th April. Interviews will be held the week beginning 20th April.
