Job overview

A Teacher of History is required to teach principally in the History department. This is an expanding subject within the Individuals and Societies faculty. The successful candidate will teach lower and upper school classes in History. The department offers both GCSE at key stage 4 and IB HL/SL at key stage 5. In addition the candidate will be expected to contribute to the other key stage 3 subjects within the faculty.

For the role of Head of History -The successful applicant will take on the role in leading the department in development of the curriculum and ensuring the quality of teaching and learning. S/he will be responsible for administering all exam programmes as well as the programme for the lower school. S/he will liaise with the Head of Humanities with respect to the contribution and place of History within the Humanities programme and courses, and will liaise with the timetabling team on staffing and timetable issues.

The Individual and Societies faculty comprises the History, Geography, PRS, Psychology and Business departments. There are currently 16 full time and 1 part time members of staff. The faculty enjoys a positive working environment with excellent examination results. The philosophy of the faculty centers around collaborative working practices and capacity building for our teachers. Continuous improvement and innovative professional development models are being developed. In short, it is an exciting time to join the faculty.

We operate a 1 to 1 laptop program currently in years 8 and 9. This program will expand up the school year by year. All teachers should be committed making the most of these resources in the teaching of their subjects. The co-curricular program is an important part of Island school life and all teachers are involved in some activities that are offered to students outside lesson time. All full time teachers are form tutors to a group of students who they see daily within the house structure.

Requirements

The successful candidate should have:

  • A relevant degree and postgraduate teaching qualification
  • At least two years experience in teaching History at GCSE and Advanced or IB Diploma level
  • An ability to teach other humanities subjects is preferred
  • The desire to embrace faculty-wide professional development models
  • The ability to realise the potential of students of all learning needs
  • A commitment to the extra-curricular life of the school
  • A commitment to pastoral care within the school
