To raise academic achievement in Tower Hamlets by contributing to a culture of continuous improvement, and taking action that achieves and exceeds local and national targets. This will mean both rapid and dramatic improvement in schools, settings and services that are weak or underperforming, and supporting continuous improvement from good to excellent in those that are already strong.

To promote partnership and integrated service provision with children, families and carers, the third sector and other independent providers, NHS partners, other Council Directorates and other public service agencies, and local networks.

To ensure that high quality services are provided to children, young people and families through the application of innovative approaches and high standards of customer care, seeking to deliver performance in all areas that is as good as or better than any other local authority in the country.

Key Responsibilities
To lead and manage education services for birth to 11 year olds in Tower Hamlets, including:

  • Primary School Improvement
  • Early Years Service
  • Children’s Centre Services
  • LA Maintained Daycare Nurseries
  • Parent and Family Services
  • Healthy LivesTeam

Requirements

  • Significant leadership experience in education, preferably successful headship experience, if not then leadership at a senior level in a relevant field such as early years.
  • A thorough understanding of how schools and settings operate across all phases of education and in particular of school improvement strategies.
  • A thorough knowledge and understanding of key educational issues including those related to the curriculum, management and other issues affecting primary schools and early years providers.
  • A wide knowledge of current education and early years legislation and a clear understanding of its impact upon schools, settings children's centres and the LA.
  • An enthusiasm for the continuous improvement and development of LA services for children and their families.
  • Experience of building and maintaining positive working relationships both within the organisation and with external bodies
