UPS/TLR

Queen Ethelburga’s is a successful and forward looking Independent Foundation of four schools with 1750+ students aged between 3 – 18 years.  Boys and girls are recruited from the UK and internationally and many live on campus.  The buildings and grounds are first rate with substantial investment giving purpose built facilities, underpinned by a dedication to high quality teaching and learning.  The school actively promotes the professional development of its staff through induction, CPD and career development opportunities.

We require an outstanding Head of Department to lead the teaching of Science in King’s Magna Middle School.  The successful candidate will ideally have experience of working in middle school settings and a thorough knowledge of the curriculum across Key Stages 2, 3 and 4.  Expertise in driving improvements in Science for all students, including those with English as an Additional Language is essential. UPS / TLR will be available for an experienced candidate and all staff are eligible for the QE salary enhancement scheme after a qualifying period.

You will join us at an exciting point, as we move to strengthen the Science curriculum provision in our middle school and links into Chapter House preparatory school.  You will have responsibility for the curriculum and its delivery; progress and tracking; and for the outcomes for pupils in years 6–9.  Individual pathways to achieve success in Key Stage 2 SATs and in building skills in preparation for Key Stage 4 will be further developed.  You will liaise with staff across the Collegiate to ensure a coordinated and effective transition at key points, and with the school leadership teams in embedding Science skills across an innovative curriculum.

Teaching of Science at examination level will be available and the senior school prepares students for GCSE, A Level and BTEC Science.

The successful candidate will:

  • Have a good honours degree
  • Manage the curriculum in years 6-9 to give all students the necessary skills for success at Key Stage 4 and in their wider lives
  • Establish strong progression in  Science across Key Stages 2 and 3
  • Carry out all duties associated with the role of Head of Department
  • Use secure skills in tracking the progress of learners, identifying gaps, putting in place effective intervention
  • Be an excellent communicator and outstanding teacher
