An exciting leadership opportunity has arisen at Aberdeen Grammar School in Aberdeen.

Aberdeen Grammar School is one of the oldest schools in Scotland with its first recorded origins dating back to 1256. Today Aberdeen Grammar School is a modern, non-denominational secondary school serving areas of Aberdeen's city centre and west end. The school works closely with its five associated primary schools to form Aberdeen Grammar School Associated Schools Group. Currently the school roll is around 1070.

Attainment is high and is improving with the percentage of young people achieving a positive destination above the national average. The curriculum reflects the schools mission statement to provide educational excellence so that pupils are equipped to be successful learners, confident individuals, effective contributors and responsible citizens. The school offers wider achievement experiences to support pupils develop and extend their skills for learning, life and work. These include a range of opportunities for pupils to assume a variety of leadership roles and to access an extensive range of cultural and sporting activities.

Qualification Requirements

Full GTC (Scotland) Registration in relevant subject. PVG Membership for Regulated Work with Children and/or Protected Adults or willingness to obtain prior to a formal offer of employment being made.

Job Specific Requirements

To lead and manage the affairs of the school, enabling the delivery of a quality education through the appropriate involvement of the pupils, staff, parents, multidisciplinary agencies and the community it serves. This will be done in accordance with the Authority's Strategic Plan, Local Improvement Objectives, the school's Improvement Plan and in line with current legislation and national and local agreements.

The following vacancy is available now, and appointment will be subject to full registration with the General Teaching Council for Scotland (GTCS), Clerwood House, 96 Clermiston Road, Edinburgh, EH12 6UT.

The Council's Relocation Scheme will apply to new employees who move to Aberdeen.

Aberdeen Grammar School is a state secondary school in Aberdeen, Scotland, catering for around 1,000 students in a co-educational setting. Founded as a boys’ independent school in 1257, the school moved to its current location in 1863 and become co-educational in 1973. 

Famously attended by the poet Lord Byron, whose statue stands in the school grounds, Aberdeen Grammar School has seen extensive redevelopment and modernisation over the past few years, with the latest additions being a gymnasium and updated rugby fields.

• The very wide range of sports, clubs and trips available for young people.  

• The strong lead given by the headteacher and extended senior management team to improving the school.
