Job overview

Due to the pending retirement of a much respected Head Teacher, an opportunity has arisen for the Governing Body of Bovington Primary School to appoint an energetic and experienced school leader to take up the post of Head Teacher.

We are proud to be an outstanding school and a school renowned for its good behaviour. The governors are seeking a committed and dedicated leader to maintain our success whilst also continually striving to improve our school further.

The School has over the last three years taken the exciting but challenging journey from a First School to a full Primary. It now has approximately 300 pupils of which 65% are from Military families and consequently the school experiences a high turnover.

The school has a high percentage of teachers who are judged outstanding by Ofsted and is actively collaborating with other schools within the Purbeck Pyramid to enhance the learning experience via the Purbeck Education Partnership.

The School is at the heart of the local community and prides itself on its dedicated staff and friendly and supportive atmosphere where every child is encouraged to be the best they can be.

Applicants for this post should be highly motivated with outstanding interpersonal skills.

The successful applicant will:

  • Have a strong commitment to the success of the school
  • Be committed to the safeguarding and well-being of children
  • Be passionate about raising standards and committed to the development of every child
  • Have proven leadership and management skills
  • Demonstrate a commitment to excellence in teaching and learning
  • Be approachable, receptive and able to challenge, motivate and inspire others
  • Have high expectations of achievement and behaviour.

Experience of a Military environment would be an advantage.

Closing date: 16th April 2015

The School

Bovington Primary School, within its own extensive grounds, overlooks the Frome Valley and Purbeck Hills.  It is situated 5 miles from the famous Jurassic Coastline.
The school has football pitches, 2 playgrounds and 3 adventure playgrounds.   The Caretaker’s bungalow is within the grounds.
The school is situated in the village of Bovington.  It was built to serve the needs of Army families posted into the area but the village of Bovington is extending.  Bovington is served by Wool and Bovington Parish Council and comes within the Purbeck District.   The area is a mixture of private and military housing.   It is approximately 2 miles from Wool and 12 miles from the County town of Dorchester.

Ofsted 2006 and 2009

In June 2006 after an Ofsted inspection the school was graded as 'Outstanding' overall.  In June 2009 we had a second Ofsted inspection and we were thrilled to be awarded outstanding again, and all areas were graded 1

We are delighted with the overwhelmingly positive comments made by both inspection teams.  It recognised the hard work put in by all of the school staff and the success that they achieved over the years. Only the top 10% of schools get awarded this grade, so we are justifiably proud that our children receive an excellent education, and it has been recognised.

In particular the inspection team found the quality of teaching and learning to be 'Outstanding' and also that the leadership and management is 'Outstanding'. This is entirely down to the effort put in by the teachers, teaching assistants, headteacher, governors and support staff.

Catchment Area

Most children attend school from within the immediate area.   A small number of children travel by bus into the school each day.  The school’s number on roll is currently around 195 however, the numbers change fairly regularly as military parents are posted to different bases on a regular basis.

The school population as a whole is affected by a large number of individual postings, as children arrive and depart throughout the year.  Wherever possible we try to ensure that the children are taught in age appropriate classes.  However, there are occasions when we have to organise mixed age range classes due to number fluctuations.

Hot school meals are available.  The school kitchen is a hub for other schools in the area.

School Accommodation and Facilities

The school, originally built in 1984, consists of 1 hall, 1 large library and 11 classrooms.   Each classroom is fully carpeted and furnished with a water cooler, sink and worktop.   Surplus accommodation has been converted into specialist areas: an ICT suite and a Music room.  Each class has an interactive whiteboard and is very well resourced.

The Future

The school is currently part of a pyramid re-organisation within the Purbecks.  This school will change from a First school (5-9 years) to Primary (5-11 years) from September 2012 when the first cohort of Year 5 children will continue their education.  This group will continue their education as a Year 6 cohort in September 2013.  School numbers will grow from the present number to 300 plus.

Further Education

The school enjoys strong links with local nursery groups and the Middle School in Bovington, to which Year 4 will transfer for the last time in September 2011.   There is an Upper School in Wareham, which will become a Secondary School in September 2013.

The Extended School

The offices for Sure Start are located in Bovington and Sure Start use a classroom for varying Mother and Children groups.  The Three Bears Nursery is situated on the school site as is JAK’s, a “before and after” school club.  Bovington First School is a fully extended school.

Staffing

In this academic year the school has 8 classes.  To support the school teaching staff the school employs 1 full-time Admin/Finance Officer, 1 part-time Admin Assistant, 1 HLTA, 11 part-time teacher assistants, 1 full-time caretaker and 3 part-time cleaning staff.   The lunch hour is organised by the senior supervisor and 7 assistants.

Friends of Bovington School – FOBS

The school has an enthusiastic parents, teachers and friends group called FOBs.  They undertake the organisation of many fundraising events throughout the year, for example: Book Week, Christmas Fayre, Termly Disco, Fashion Show, Jumble Sale, and Summer Fayre.   This has enabled the school to purchase books for the library, playground equipment, kitchen equipment etc

General Organisation

The teaching staff work as a team in the planning and implementation of the National Curriculum linked to the Creative Curriculum.   Currently in Key Stage 1, there are two Reception classes, one Year 1 class, one Year 1 & 2 Class and one Year 2 class.  In Key Stage 2 there are three Year 3/4 classes.  A Teaching Assistant supports each class.   All members of staff have areas of the curriculum to co-ordinate.
