Job overview

The Governing Body of Widcombe C of E Junior School are seeking to appoint as Headteacher a person with exceptional leadership qualities and interpersonal skills who is highly motivated and enthusiastic in their approach to pupils’ education. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate strong leadership, vision and commitment to working in partnership with all members of the school community to take this “Outstanding” school beyond Ofsted; someone who can champion a rounded education and further enhance and develop our vibrant and successful school.

Applications from current Headteachers and Deputy Headteachers are welcome.

The Governors are looking for someone who will:

  • Lead, inspire and enable staff to be excellent teachers and facilitators of learning;
  • Continue to make learning a happy existence for every child;
  • Value every child and strive to ensure pupils and staff have high aspirations and feel fully supported in achieving that goal;
  • Be ambitious and creative, supporting the school’s plans to build a new hall, to serve not just the school but also the community;
  • Be committed to maintaining and further developing the Christian ethos of the school;
  • Be resilient and continuously strive to improve the high level of pupil progress and attainment of all pupils, so that “every child can be the best they can”.

The children are looking for someone who:

  • “Will be fun, imaginative, warm and enjoy being with us;
  • Every child will trust, who is fair, positive and firm when they need to be but not strict;
  • All of us will find approachable, supportive, understanding and loving;
  • Is involved and engaged, who builds on our traditions and ethos, and who is driven to make changes for the better”.

We can offer:

  • A school with very high standards and huge potential for an ambitious and imaginative leader;
  • Pupils who “are keen to come to school and learn. They get on well with each other and with the adults in the school. Pupils are polite, well-mannered and sensible” (Ofsted 2014);
  • Gifted, experienced, energetic and dedicated staff;
  • Committed and supportive school Governors and parents;
  • A very broad and stimulating curriculum which develops and celebrates every child’s personality, talents and skills;
  • A harmonious and friendly school environment which enjoys established partnerships with parents, church and a vibrant local community.

Widcombe C of E Junior School is a popular two-form-entry school with 240 pupils on the roll in the beautiful World Heritage City of Bath. Our existing Headteacher is leaving after 12 highly successful years at the school to further her career elsewhere. The school was rated “Outstanding” in October 2014. We aim to give our children a love of learning, inquisitive minds, appropriate skills and adaptability to an ever changing, increasingly challenging world within a nurturing environment with a Christian ethos.

Visits to the school are welcomed and encouraged. If you are interested, please contact the school secretary, Jenny Urquhart, on 01225 310139 to arrange a visit.

About Widcombe CofE Junior School

Founded in 1839 under the care of the local parish church of St Matthew’s , our school continues to be very much a part of Widcombe. We host Widcombe Association events, Bath Opera and the Bath Symphony orchestra rehearse on site. National Trust land, the Kennet and Avon Canal, Bath’s Leisure Centre, Bath Rugby, Roman Baths, Egg children’s theatre, St Matthew’s church and many other places within walking distance are regularly used as part of the school year.

The original school was demolished and replaced with new buildings ten years ago. We have eight classrooms each with a Smart Board and a separate practical area. There are smaller group teaching rooms, a Library, and a trolley of laptops for whole class use.

We have held a Gold Artsmark for some time, reflecting the strength of music and performing arts in the school. However, following requests from the children, we have recently developed a range of sports teams and clubs which the children really enjoy.

The School Vision is to be an exceptional school, with a Christian ethos, where the education we provide develops every child’s personality, talents and abilities to the full.   In our school we want each child to have an understanding of their responsibility to value and respect everyone’s rights and beliefs, both within the school and the wider world.   Our exceptional school will be a place where every child will say ‘I want to be the best I can'.
