Job overview

Welburn Hall School is a special school with a very bright future.

Welburn Hall School (WHS) is a thriving special school for young people aged between 8-19 who want to learn how to live purposeful, independent lives. It has a very healthy budget, more demand than it can meet and a dedicated and skilled staff team. The school and grounds are set in the beautiful North Yorkshire countryside offer a wonderful spacious environment for learning, extra curricular activities and a waking hours' curriculum. The North York Moors and Yorkshire coast are nearby.

WHS is stable and has worked hard to progress from its last OFSTED visits (2011 educational provision Good, 2014 residential provision Satisfactory). The governors and school team are confident that WHS is capable of being recognised as much better than this and that there are currently areas of outstanding practice. The current head teacher is retiring and the governors are looking for a leader to build on the work done over the last few years in order to take WHS to the highest level.

We are looking for a special leader.

The Governors invite applications from ambitious and inspiring teachers interested in leading Welburn Hall School, a special school, to Outstanding status from January 2016.

If you are an educational leader with the ability, desire and strategic vision to lead WHS to the next level then we would be very interested to hear from you. There are excellent thinkers and capable doers; WHS is looking for a head teacher who can think strategically and creatively, plan effectively and implement improvement at the highest level.

You should have experience of special needs education and know how to overcome the particular challenges involved. You should also appreciate the crucial importance of the right level of challenge and how to ensure that this happens automatically for each young person at WHS in all areas of learning.

We need a dynamic and inspirational person who can do all of the following:

  • Articulate a clear vision based on a shared understanding to all stakeholders
  • Implement a strategy to achieve this effectively
  • Support and challenge staff to ensure the best outcomes for young people
  • Ensure skilled and professional levels of communication, planning, organisation, scheduling, line management and performance
  • Establish strong partnerships within WHS and externally
  • Ensure exceptional progress of young people in all areas
  • Further develop the WHS provision
  • Move quickly and instil a sense of urgency for improvement
  • Contribute to the review options for alternative types of school structure to ensure that WHS continues to thrive

We actively welcome interest from talented and dynamic Deputy Head teachers looking for their first headship as well as experienced Head teachers looking to further their career in a larger school. We will also consider applications from other Senior Leaders with the ambition and talent to step up to the challenge.

In return, you can expect

  • The opportunity to help develop the vision and key strategic objectives for the school
  • A committed and talented staff team
  • Excellent business support to enable you and your teaching team to focus efforts on ensuring and embedding excellent teaching and learning
  • A good salary with a significant residential allowance and opportunity for significant increase based on performance
  • Strong support for sensible spending plans which demonstrate impact
  • An ambitious and well informed governing body who will constructively challenge and support you to embrace changes for the better
  • A supportive local community

The successful candidate may be relocating and the use of an on-site flat (e.g. for occasional overnight stays) is available.
