Job overview

As part of the Wellspring Multi Academy Trust, Springwell Special Academy is an outstanding cross-phase SEMH Special School with a national reputation for excellence in working with challenging and vulnerable children with special educational needs.  As a National Teaching School, Springwell is at the cutting edge of educational development, involved in national research and development, teacher training, bespoke CPD and school-to-school support. This creates obvious opportunities for professional development and career progression beyond the classroom.

Springwell Learning Community also incorporates Springwell Alternative Academy, (KS1 to 4), EOTAS, Elective Home education and the Behaviour Support Service. Working in partnership with Barnsley College, we also have a bespoke Post 16 provision.

Springwell Special Academy serves the whole of Barnsley and is a state of the art multi-million pound specialist building. The school has been designed around a vision where unconditional positive regard lies at the core of everything we do. Sound, lighting, shape and space all contribute to a pedagogical approach based on nurture principles and immersive learning that promotes creativity across the curriculum, with a strong emphasis on literacy. In the heart of the school we have an innovative immersive space allowing compelling learning experiences to engage and motivate our pupils.

The Executive Principal of Springwell is a member of the Head teachers’ Roundtable which is working at a national level to influence education policy. He is also an associate of Independent Thinking Limited and a National Leader of Education.

Springwell places a huge emphasis on professional development and invests significantly in staff training at all levels. This means that, although experience of working in an SEMH setting would be an advantage, specialist support and training will be provided for outstanding teachers wishing to make the career fulfilling move into special education.

This position would suit a teacher with a proven track record of outstanding practice, who is able to work with challenging, vulnerable pupils and can teach English, Mathematics and other subjects using a primary model.  A primary teacher or English specialist would be desirable for this position.  A TLR allowance will be available for an outstanding leader who is willing to offer an appropriate middle leadership responsibility.

Two Schools - One Community

Springwell Learning Community is the umbrella name for Springwell Special Academy and Springwell Alternative Academy.  Springwell Special Academy provides cross-phase education for Barnsley children with social, emotional and mental health difficulties. Springwell Alternative Academy works in partnership with local primary and secondary schools to provide Day 6 provision.

Both of these schools are part of the Barnsley and Kirklees Special Provision Partnership, formed through additional collaboration of Greenacre School, Joseph Norton Academy and Springwell Learning Community.

At Springwell, our full time staff of around 100 is dedicated to ensuring that every pupil can settle quickly and is supported to make good progress in line with our vision and mission.

Both academies are the same as any other in that we have high expectations of our pupils. We build a secure and happy atmosphere in which pupils can learn effectively, we support pupils to access a broad range of subjects and qualifications, including GCSEs and we provide opportunities and facilities for pupils to develop special interests and talents through a range of extra-curricular activities.

However, we are different to other academies in that places at our special school are accessed via the SEND consultation process and places at our alternative academy are accessed via Fair Access.

Springwell Learning Community is a specialist provision for pupils with social, emotional and mental health (SEMH) needs.  A number of our pupils have secondary needs including difficulties with their communication and learning.
