An enthusiastic full-time teacher is sought to teach the curriculum at Key Stage 2, from September 2024 on a fixed term contract until 31 August 2025. The Boys’ Junior School is a strong and vibrant unit within the School and an excellent setting for either starting or furthering a career in teaching. We have ambitions to build on our outstanding inspection report to be the very best in junior education and we seek a KS2 teacher who shares that vision.
The successful candidate will be joining a well-resourced school, with supportive, experienced colleagues. Candidates should display excellent classroom practice and be keen to work as part of a team to provide the best education for able boys. A willingness to participate fully in the extra-curricular programme within school is essential, and being able to contribute to the sporting life of the school would be advantageous.
The present Boys’ Junior School teaching staff consists of twelve full-time teachers, two part-time teachers and four teaching assistants. They are supported by the Deputy Head, as well as one full-time and four part-time secretarial and ancillary staff. One unusual aspect regarding the staff is the focus upon specialist subject teaching which applies throughout Year 5 and Year 6, to a large extent in Year 4 and to some extent in Year 3. The School is also fortunate to have a number of specialist teaching rooms. The loyalty, commitment and dedication of the staff ensures that the strong academic programme is richly complemented by an unusually wide range of extra-curricular activities. There is strong co-operation with the other parts of the Primary Division and in the wider Bolton School Foundation, especially with the ADT, PE and Music departments, where the Junior School has access to the expertise of Senior School staff, in addition to having its own specialists. The Junior School has an outstanding reputation in ADT, sport and music.
The Head of the Boys’ Junior School, who is also the Head of Primary Division, has responsibility for the overall conduct of the Boys’ Junior School, its curriculum, marketing, recruitment of both staff and pupils and the management and development of the resources and finances.
All staff and pupils are issued with iPads; applicants with an interest in the use of mobile devices in the classroom would be desirable.
With some 2,500 pupils, Bolton School is a large, thriving, academically selective day school. It is situated a mile or so from the town centre in a stunning 32 acre campus and is within easy reach of some of the nation’s finest cities and countryside.
In Autumn 2021, significant changes were made to the leadership structure of the School Foundation, investing the newly created position of Head of Foundation with overall responsibility. Within the new structure, there are three sections: Girls’ Division, Boys’ Division and Primary Division. A Head of each Division and the Head of Foundation, together with the Clerk and Treasurer, are the Foundation’s Senior Officers; they are directly accountable to the Governors.
Two adjoining and similar buildings, now attached by a state-of-the art Sixth Form Centre, house the Boys’ and Girls’ Senior Schools, each of which provides a traditional academic education from the age of 11 years. The Primary Division includes separate Junior Schools for boys and girls from the age of 7 and a co-educational Infant School and Nursery.
Academic results at GCSE and A Level consistently place Bolton School amongst the top schools in the North of England and often within the top 100 nationally. The School is also renowned for its provision of a wide range of enrichment activities, which take place both during and after the school day. It serves a wide area of the North West, collecting pupils on over 20 coach routes, and provides fee assistance to a substantial proportion of the student body - one in five Senior School pupils currently receives a bursary.
The vast majority of students progress to their first choice university and the School provides a regular supply of Sixth Formers to highly competitive courses and universities. Whilst the academic work of the two senior schools is largely separate, there are occasionally joint Sixth Form classes and there is considerable collaboration in extra-curricular activities.
Entry to the Junior and Senior Schools is by competitive examination and interview. Interest in the School remains robust and numbers on the school roll have increased in recent years.
Since 2022, the school has formalised its approach to evidence-based practice with the formation of the Centre for Educational Research and Innovation (CERI). The Centre facilitates both research engagement as well as supporting action research.
Our aim is to ensure Bolton School is at the forefront of educational and pedagogical development. The CERI has a pivotal role in working alongside teachers to investigate the impact of innovation in the classroom. Foundation wide, we are well equipped to test emerging theory and to understand what will give the greatest benefit to students.
The Centre works with staff across our Primary and Senior Schools but also looks beyond to collaborate with external institutions, both universities and other schools seeking to share and develop knowledge and understanding of what helps children and young people to learn.

Pastoral
Behaviour at the School is excellent. Each school within the Foundation places great emphasis on its pastoral provision and teachers build strong relationships with pupils. In Senior School, guidance, support and encouragement are provided by the pastoral team, which comprises the Subject Teacher, the Form Tutor, the Head of Year, Heads of School/Section and Deputy Heads. Any problems are dealt with rapidly, either by the staff team or the School Nurses.
There is a sense of purpose and challenge within the School, but this is built on an atmosphere that is friendly, supportive and, above all, happy. As pupils grow through the School they develop the independence and self-motivation that will allow them to thrive when they leave.
Outstanding Facilities
All of our schools, from Nursery to Sixth Form, are on site and pupils make use of our outstanding facilities set in 32 acres of grounds.
The School combines heritage and modernity. With a history stretching back over 500 years, the School provides a local landmark on Chorley New Road with its imposing pink sandstone buildings replete with Neo-Gothic façade and turrets.
In September 2013, the opening of the new Riley Sixth Form Centre marked the latest phase in an £18m building project which saw the construction of a new state-of-the-art Junior Girls’ School (Hesketh House) and Infant School and the refurbishment and extension of our Junior Boys' School.
"The Levels" provide a running track and numerous high quality football, rugby, lacrosse and cricket pitches and nets. There are netball courts on site and at Leverhulme Pavilion, where there are also hockey and lacrosse pitches (a new sports surface was laid in 2019) and tennis courts, which is a short walk from the School.
The Arts and Conference Centre, opened by Diana, Princess of Wales, in 1993, provides a first-class auditorium and theatre as well as a swimming pool and Sports Hall. Other facilities include a multi-gym, theatres, well-stocked libraries and gymnasiums in both Senior Schools, where there are also outstanding Technology and Science laboratories and Art studios.
Pupils also benefit from time spent at the School's adventure learning centre, Patterdale Hall, which is located on the southern shores of Ullswater in the Lake District.
Engagement with the Community
The School is, and always has been, inextricably linked with the local community. It is a central part of our ethos that pupils engage with the real world and that when they leave the School they will make a positive contribution to society. It is through the interaction with local, national and international concerns that pupils learn about topical issues and develop a sense of their place in the world.

School Inspection Reports
The School is inspected regularly by the Independent Schools Inspectorate (ISI).
The last inspection of the Boys' Division (Junior and Senior Boys' School) found it to be excellent in all areas.
The Girls' Division (co-educational Nursery and Infant School and Junior and Senior Girls' Schools) was described as excellent in all areas with the Early Years' Foundation Stage (0-5 years old) also receiving the top judgement of being "outstanding" in every category.

Location
Bolton School is at the centre of an excellent motorway and main road network. The campus is situated on the A673 (Chorley New Road) about one mile to the west of Bolton’s town centre and within easy access of the M60 and M61 motorways. The School attracts students from a wide catchment area and our own coach company provides a very comprehensive network of bus routes to cater for their needs.
