Job overview

Are you passionate about Maths learning and teaching? Can you help colleagues develop their practice to improve outcomes for children and young people?

Are you an experienced and outstanding teacher? Would you welcome an opportunity to share your practice more widely to support teachers and schools in raising standards? If so Achieving for Children is keen to hear from you. We are currently recruiting to our highly skilled and well regarded team of school improvement professionals and have vacancies for:

  • Lead School Improvement Advisor (Maths)

Achieving for Children (AfC) was launched on 1 April 2014 as a community interest company, jointly owned by Kingston and Richmond to provide children’s services within the two boroughs. This is a first nationally, putting us at the forefront of service re-design. Within AfC our aim is achieve excellence in everything we do by putting children and young people first in the design, delivery and evaluation of every service we provide, to ensure they are supported to live safe, happy, healthy and successful lives. This is an exciting time to join us.

The cornerstone of our approach to school improvement within AfC is our development of SPA[RK] – the School Performance Alliance for Richmond and Kingston. This is a strong partnership between AfC education professionals and schools. The posts advertised here represent a significant part of that development. School standards in Richmond and Kingston are very high and we want to maintain and improve these further.

The major part of the role will require you to become our leading voice on either English or mathematics, responsible for standards in our schools and the strategy for improving outcomes further. Subject to the availability of resources you will be required to recruit and manage a small cross-phase team of school-based practitioners to provide support across the primary, secondary and special schools that are members of SPA[RK].

To join our team you should:

  • be an outstanding practitioner
  • have excellent knowledge and understanding of strategies to promote high quality learning experiences
  • have good knowledge and understanding of strategies to promote enhanced school performance with evidence of your own impact
  • have experience of working with teachers and middle leaders to improve practice
  • have experience of leading training for groups of teachers
  • be committed to inclusion
  • be committed to working in partnership with schools and teachers to raise standards
  • demonstrate excellent interpersonal and communication skills
  • be willing to play an important role in sustaining and continually improving quality
  • be able to work independently while being an active participant within our team

In addition to your special interest in English/mathematics teaching you will have been a senior leader or subject leader in a school and/or you will have experience of a school improvement role in a local authority or similar setting. The bulk of our work is with primary schools and this post will suit candidates from that background though it is open to anyone able to meet the demands and expectations of the role.

Due to these posts having access to children and/or vulnerable adults, candidates will be required to undertake a Disclosure and Barring Service Check. The possession of a criminal record will not necessarily prevent an applicant from obtaining this post, as all cases are judged individually according to the nature of the role and information provided.

For an informal discussion about this opportunity please contact either:

  • Graham Willett (Achieving for Children Director of Education Services) on 02085475287 or
  • Rosemary Hafeez (Head of School Standards and Performance) on 02085475252.
