Job overview

We have a unique full-time opportunity for a loving, caring, enthusiastic and happy Teaching/Learning Support Assistant to join our amazing team to:

  • primarily support on a one-on-one basis a lovely, verbal child (largely attaining age-level academic levels) with an EHCP through the end of their Reception year and then through Key Stage 1, including facilitating social interactions and supporting access to group learning and meeting classroom expectations, and
  • secondarily support the child’s class teacher in delivering our bespoke, fun curriculum to all the pupils in one of our relatively small-sized classes and well-resourced facilities.

Longer term, there will be ample opportunities for further deployment in similarly exciting roles as a Learning Support or Classroom Teaching Assistant in our leading Early Childhood Education school.

You will hold a relevant Teaching Assistant qualification to at least Level 2 (and more likely Level 3 or above) and have extensive experience of working with young children who have SEND, adapting and differentiating the curriculum to their needs and style.

We offer a uniquely friendly and supportive environment, a strong established team, well-resourced facilities and competitive salaries.

The current actual annual salary ranges from £22,020 - to £23,270 depending on the successful candidate’s experience (and there will be a small increase from this autumn once we have decided our annual pay award).

It is for Term-Time Only (34-35 school/working weeks + 5.6 weeks paid holiday) for our standard full-time hours of 8.30-15.45 Monday-Friday (the comparable current annual Full-Time Equivalent salary would be £28,705 -£30,330). The 30-minute lunch break and the 15-minute morning break are paid. There is an opportunity for earning additional remuneration through enhanced overtime rates for wrap-around care.

Please visit the "Work with us" page of our website for further details, including the job description and person specification. To apply, please download the application form and, once completed, email it to enquiries@hernehillschool.co.uk.

The application submission deadline is end of day Thursday 25 April 2024; early applications are welcome.

Herne Hill School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and expects all staff to share that commitment. Applicants must undergo child protection screening, including checks with past employers and the Disclosure and Barring Service.

We are looking forward to hearing from you!

Herne Hill School is a well-established independent Pre-Preparatory and Pre-School in South London. It is the largest stand-alone independent school in the country focusing exclusively on Early Childhood Education for two-year-olds through to Year 2.

Since its foundation in 1976, it has had only one purpose: providing young children with the best possible start for a successful and balanced academic life. There are about 300 pupils on roll, split into the Kindergarten at our new, dedicated and state-of-the art site at 99 Herne Hill, which then feeds into Pre-Reception, Reception, Year 1 and ultimately Year 2 classes at our main site at 127 Herne Hill.

There are approximately 70 staff members (about 25 teachers and peripatetic instructors, 40 teaching assistants and five support staff), who are overseen by the Headteacher, Ngaire Telford, and the Director/Proprietor, Dominik Magyar. Everyone works towards fulfilling our common purpose:

“At Herne Hill School, we prepare young children for life …

by providing the finest individual education …

… based on a bedrock of love and care.”

The school’s ethos of Love ∙ Care ∙ Excellence encapsulates our commitment to excellence and our belief that love and care are prerequisites for a top-quality education. The school’s atmosphere lives this philosophy. It is a caring, friendly, fun, supportive and well-resourced environment conducive to optimal learning and development.

Our website and the last ISI inspection report, which can also be found there, provide a good overview of our values, approach to teaching and learning and modus operandi.

Candidates who would like to see more detailed information on the school’s provision and daily life can email our Registrar Catherine Ross at enquiries@hernehillschool.co.uk to request access to the password-protected Prospective Parent Area on our website.
