Job overview

How much you achieve in life should not be determined by how much your parents earn. Yet in the UK, it too often is. We believe in the power of education to change this.

This is a pivotal role and we’re looking for a driven manager and leader to help us succeed in ensuring that no child’s educational success is limited by their socio-economic background.

As Local Area Manager for North London, you’ll be accountable for the progression of participants on Teach First’s Leadership Development Programme. You’ll manage the relationship with over 80 primary and secondary schools, identifying potential areas of collaboration and have oversight of the development, retention and impact of over 300 participants (trainee teachers).

You’ll lead and manage a team of 13 employees and be part of the London senior team to influence team wide initiatives and programmes. Teach First is a growing organisation with more than 500 employees, you’ll collaborate with many internal teams as well as working in conjunction with the Initial Teacher Development University Partners across England.

There will be increasing opportunities to develop external networks and we’re looking for someone to use existing contacts and skill to develop new relationships. You’ll leverage local networks and develop external partnerships with aligned organisations (e.g. charities, businesses and media) that can provide opportunities to increase our collective impact in addressing our vision.

We’re looking for someone with experience of working in the education and/or social sector - direct classroom experience is not necessary although it could help fast track your learning at Teach First. This is a crucial role for us with a strong operational focus.

To be successful, you’ll need to prove your skill and effectiveness in relationship building, influencing and negotiation, business acumen and strategic thinking. You’ll have line management experience and previous experience setting goals and a vision for a team is essential. Current contextual knowledge of primary or secondary school systems in England is strongly preferred.

Teach First is an independent educational charity, Reg. No. 1098294, established in 2002 to directly address the problem of educational disadvantage.  Now in its eighth year, Teach First has already changed the lives of thousands of young people. Working with a range of partner organisations Teach First harnesses the energy, enthusiasm and drive of exceptional graduates to provide leadership, motivation and, above all, inspirational teaching in challenging schools across England, through a two year Leadership Development Programme.  The Programme combines working, qualifying and training as a teacher with leadership development training, coaching and mentoring, and a range of networking and internship opportunities. Beyond the two-year Programme, Teach First works to empower, equip and mobilise its ambassadors (alumni) with the skills, tools and networks they need to support the Teach First mission by driving forward sustainable change in education from both inside and outside the classroom.

Teach First is currently ranked 8th in the coveted league of Times Top 100 Graduate Employers – the highest ranked charity in Britain, and was the Charity Awards Education and Training Charity of the Year 2009. The organisation currently has 160 employees across the country with an annual operating budget of over £12 million. We rely on voluntary donations from companies and foundations and other sources to continue our work.  We also receive support from the government and uniquely have been identified by all three political parties in their election manifestoes as an initiative they each wish to support and expand.
