Job overview

Small enough to care, big enough to make a positive impact

As a 13-18 school in south east Northumberland with good standards of teaching and behaviour and a strong commitment to improvement, we believe passionately that every student should be enabled to succeed in all aspects of school life. We are particularly proud of the contribution that our mathematics department makes to this aim. The department performs consistently well under the experienced leadership of the Head of Faculty.

This role is for an excellent mathematics practitioner to teach across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5 and would equally suit a more experienced or a newly qualified or teacher. With a strong sense of purpose and drive to improve student attainment and progress, you will join a small but committed team and will be supported to further develop your career and professional practice.

Although this post is primarily to teach at Astley Community High School, you may also be required to teach at Whytrig Middle School as both schools share an Executive Headteacher and the same site.

Our candidate information pack will tell you much more about this vacancy and the school. Visits to the schools are also warmly welcomed and encouraged. Please contact Annette Rhodes, Head of School (ACHS) on 0191 2371505 to make an appointment.

We are committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people. It is essential that all staff and volunteers share this commitment. An enhanced criminal records check from the Disclosure and Barring Service is required for all posts.

Interested in applying?

A completed application form and criminal records declaration form must be submitted by 12 noon on Tuesday 14 April 2015 by e-mail to mathsteacher@astleyhigh.org. It is expected that shortlisting will take place on Thursday 16 April and interviews will be held on Monday 27 April.

Astley Community High School is a 13-18 co-educational high school situated in the south east of Northumberland.  The school is in the heart of the village of Seaton Delaval, which lies approximately 2 miles from the coast and about 10 miles north of Newcastle upon Tyne.

The school is part of the close working group of the Seaton Valley Partnership of schools which also includes 5 first schools and two middle Schools.  The strength and effectiveness of the partnership is widely praised by the local authority and by the individual schools.

Since 2008 Astley Community High School, Whytrig Middle School and Seaton Sluice Middle School have shared a single governing body and are known collectively as the Seaton Valley Federation of Schools.  Although the three schools each retain their individual identity, they work to collaborate and share good practice across the Federation.  Astley Community High School and Whytrig Middle School share the same school site, as well as an Executive Headteacher, with each school being managed on a day-to-day basis by a Head of School.  It is currently proposed that the Executive Headteacher will also take on responsibility for Seaton Sluice Middle School from September 2015 to ensure integrated and cohesive leadership across the Federation.

Astley Community High School also works in close partnership with other secondary and high schools throughout Northumberland and neighbouring local authorities.  We have strong links with our local teaching school, Cramlington Learning Village, as well as membership of subject and curriculum networks facilitated by Durham County Council’s School Improvement Service.
