Job overview

At Brightstowe we teach young people to think mathematically. We train them to be systematic, spot patterns, test extremes, generalise and prove. We like to inspire them with the elements of mystery and surprise in maths. We believe mistakes are learning opportunities and good mathematicians are made and not just born. We love our subject because maths is art and it helps to make meaning of the world, not just because it’s useful. We’ve designed a brand new curriculum to reflect these values and meet the challenges of the new National Curriculum. Our students love it, and in our Academy it’s cool to be good at maths.

“The only way to learn mathematics is to do mathematics.” – Paul Halmos, Professor of Mathematics

The role

This is an exceptional opportunity to strengthen the delivery of our new curriculum and lead on aspects of mathematical pedagogy so that every lesson has the potential to be an outstanding lesson.

Consequently you will be instrumental in driving the mathematics department from a Good Ofsted judgment in January 2015 to Outstanding in all aspects. You will be familiar with the latest developments in learning theory related to secondary mathematics education and will already have begun to incorporate them into your own classroom practice. You will be confident to lead CPD sessions and conduct your own research into the effectiveness of teaching practices, feeding back your findings to the Lead Teacher to help improve the delivery of the mathematics curriculum. You will also use your mathematical expertise to help develop engaging and instructive problems and teaching resources in collaboration with the rest of the maths team.

Our Academy is growing rapidly to become the most popular choice for parents in this area. This year our specialist Year 7 Base will rise to full capacity for the first time. As a result, there are significant opportunities for career advancement within the Academy for professionals who are passionate, conscientious and committed to continually improving their teaching practice.

Equal opportunities

As a secular Academy, we actively seek applications from candidates of any faith or non-faith to join our completely inclusive community that is based on a set of shared, commonly held values. Please do not hesitate to contact us or arrange a visit to us if you wish to find out more about working at Brightstowe.

Closing date: Midday Friday 17 April 2015.

What we stand for...

We often use the word ‘ethos’ to describe the character of Oasis Community Learning and our Academies.

Central to the ethos of Oasis Academy Brightstowe is the idea of a rich and balanced educational environment - academically, vocationally, socially, morally, spiritually, physically, emotionally and environmentally.

Our goal
The goal is to raise aspirations, unlock students' potential and work towards achieving excellence through encouraging a 'can do' culture which nurtures confident and competent people. The Academy aims to develop informed and active learners with a strong sense of self-confidence who can explore questions, seek solutions, solve problems and are not afraid to fail initially, because from failure springs learning and success.

Oasis believes that this can be achieved through high-quality facilities, outstanding staff, clear leadership, a positive, affirming environment and a partnership between students, parents and the Academy. Parents/Carers will be positively engaged in supporting each child.

Our ethos
The ethos of the Oasis Academy is rooted in Christian-based core values, which permeates every aspect of its life. These include valuing everyone and protecting individual rights to freedom and choice, working actively against discrimination and social exclusion, and respecting the beliefs and practices of others. The Academy provides a welcoming environment for students of all faiths and no faith and serves the whole community.
