As Policy Advisor you will produce relevant evidence based policy and guidance for seminars, workshops and publications as well as preparing reports, advice documents, briefing papers, articles and web content on issues falling within the scope of the department. You will also be required to represent the Association at meetings of national external bodies and in the media promoting its policies and stance on issues, seeking to influence, negotiate with and lobby politicians, government agencies and other relevant bodies.

The successful candidate will possess substantial experience of working at a senior level within a policy, education or trade union environment, supported by demonstrable experience of conducting negotiations. Experience of working in the secondary sector would be an advantage.

Excellent communication skills with the ability to establish credibility with members of NAHT, local authorities, employers and other trade unions supported by excellent research and analytical skills with sound and balanced judgement and good attention to detail are essential for this role.

1. General information

The NAHT represents 28,000 school leaders, including virtually every Special School head, 85% of all Primary School heads, and over 40% of all Secondary School heads. NAHT is the only professional association that provides individual support for school leaders in England, Wales and Northern Ireland across the 0 - 19 age range. 

It offers:

2. Internal staffing structure

There are offices in Haywards Heath, Cardiff and Belfast in addition to this throughout England, Wales and Northern Ireland there are 17 Regional Officers who are home based.

NAHT headquarters at Haywards Heath, West Sussex consists of:
* The General Secretary’s Unit (dealing with policy, relations with Government and the Press);
* Departments that cover Professional Services, which are:
• Education Management
• Training and Development
• Salaries, Pensions Conditions
* The Legal Department (works closely with the Salaries, Pensions and Conditions and Education Management departments in support of the Trade Union function);
* General Office (providing support services to the organisation as a whole).
* Marketing, Information and Communications
* Membership Services
* Courses Consultancy and Conferences

3. The Regional Officer network

There are currently 17 full-time Regional Officers based in the regions, and line managed by two Senior Regional Officers. The regions they cover are Central North; North West; South West; Greater London (East); Greater London (West); North East; South and Mid Wales; Yorkshire; Central South; Central Midlands; Central West; West Midlands; Northern Ireland; South East; Eastern; North Wales and Cheshire; and East Midlands. Wales and Northern Ireland have staffed regional offices. All other Regional Officers work from home.
