Job overview

The School

Established in 2013, BTEC is a new, non-profit education initiative sponsored by Azerbaijan’s State Oil Company, SOCAR. From small beginnings on a site west of central Baku, the school has now grown to 480 pupils. This number will increase to 620 by September 2015, and we therefore need more qualified teachers throughout the school.

In September 2014, the school moved to a purpose-built site in Neftchiler, the eastern part of the city and close to the main highway to the airport. The buildings are spacious and there is room for further expansion in the future. In addition to classrooms, there are well equipped laboratories, two computer laboratories, facilities for Art and Music, library, fully equipped theatre, indoor six-lane swimming pool, indoor sports hall and a large fitness room with the latest equipment.

At present, the school has pupils from Nursery through to Year 9, and a year 10 class (first year of GCSE/IGCSE) will open in September 2015. Thereafter, year 11 will open in September 2016 and so forth. Pupils follow the curriculum of England and Wales, but those whose nationality is Azerbaijani (over 80% of the current roll) must also fulfil the requirements of the national government regarding the study of their country’s culture and language.

The maximum class size is 20 pupils. Reception (Early Years) and all Primary classes have an international teacher, plus a local co-teacher with whom he or she collaborates daily. The international teacher has a responsibility to ensure that the co-teacher is fully involved, contributing his or her expertise on an equal basis.

Applications

Applications are warmly welcomed from suitably qualified teachers. The initial contract is for one year, in accordance with the country’s labour code, but can be renewed by mutual consent.

Salaries are very competitive, and are paid net of tax. The employment package includes accommodation, relocation allowance, healthcare insurance and one return flight per year.

We look forward to hearing from you, and hope that you will want to join a friendly and positive team.

About Azerbaijan British College

   The School

Azerbaijan British College (ABC) is an independent, secular, coeducational, British-style through-school located in the beautiful capital city Baku, on the shore of the Caspian Sea.

Established in 2013, ABC is a new, non-profit education initiative sponsored by Azerbaijan’s State Oil Company, SOCAR.

In addition to classrooms, there are well-equipped laboratories, computer laboratories, facilities for Art and Music, a library, fully equipped theatre, a six-lane indoor swimming pool, an indoor sports hall and a large fitness room with the latest equipment.

At present, the school has pupils from Nursery through to Year 13. Pupils follow the curriculum of England and Wales, but those whose nationality is Azerbaijani (over 80% of the current roll) must also fulfill the requirements of the national government regarding the study of their country’s culture and language.

The maximum class size is 18 pupils and almost all classes are 90-95% full. In our kindergarten we have a total of three (3) teachers and teaching assistants in each class, whereas in primary, we have one teacher and one teaching assistant, in order to provide better attention to all students’ individual needs when necessary. In secondary we generally have one teacher per class only, but we frequently split the classes into smaller groups for some of the subjects, like mathematics, physics or English.

Accreditation & Inspections

ABC is accredited by the Ministry of Education of Azerbaijan. We are also a fully accredited school by the Council of International Schools (CIS) and the British Council of International Schools (COBIS). We are licensed to offer a range of qualifications from two largest International Examination Boards, Cambridge International Assessment (CIA) and Edexcel.

ABC is also an invited member of the Black Sea Schools Group (BSS), which is an association of  British accredited schools in our region.  BSS organise meetings, competitions and opportunities to share best practice between the regions top accredited schools.

Inclusive Learning Services

Inclusive education at ABC is an approach that aims to involve everybody, and ensure no young learner feels excluded during their time spent at ABC.  UNICEF clearly state that all children have the right to quality education and learning.  We seek to embody this at ABC and provide all our learners with the help they need to fulfill their potential and cater to their particular needs.  All our learners should make progress and feel included in our educational process.

Our inclusive learning services, alongside those of pastoral care, aim to see the child thrive in a supportive academic environment.
